The Boxing thread

I, Francie McNicholl, Paul McCloskey’s manager would like to set the record straight and let the public decide the truth from fiction. It was Paul’s decision alone to not accept the offer.

I find this a bit baffling, most fighters would take a world title fight for free. Every fighter believes they are the best, and if you look at hasim rahman v lennox lewis, one punch can change your life, for the better. Yes, leighton you will say, that boxing is a dangerous sport and the fighters need to be compensated, i know i've been there done it, for NO money, just plastic trophies medals and the enjoyment of the sport.

The shame is, i actually believe mcCloskey has a great chance, to smack this clown about and make us all happy.

Lennox Lewis will tell you himself that he trained like a clown and got what he deserved.

It wasn't rahman's fault though was it? Or buster douglas's, or corrie sanders, or tarver kayo'ing the 'invincible' roy jones junior, or turpin beating the formiddable ray robinson!

I see what you are saying but every single pro fighter nowadays are out there to get the best deal for themselfs. What they were asking for was not a lot when you look at it. I think Paul would of had a decent chance at winning the title over Khan but if they feel undervalued by Khan which Paulie thinks then why take it. He will defend his title in March then hopefully some time in the Summer he will get a World title fight. I beleive that the fight could be a World title elimanator fight for 1 of the titles. So for McCloskey defend his title 1 more time and let Hearn get him a World title fight. You never know in Boxing he could end up fighting for the title in Ireland if a title becomes vacant. Its mordern day boxing how many fights could of been made in the last few years but never got made over 1 reason.

No not there fault, upsets do happen but boxers present have learnt off of the past ones. I read a story somewhere that Tyson didnt even train before the buster fight. A punch can change history forever and has done on so many occasions. But a lucky punch and being a good fighter are 2 different things

Im not ignoring the ones when they have the once off fight of there life, everyone likes the littleman story its one of the fairytailes of boxing

Yes, mcCloskey goes and wins another version of the 'world' title, then khan's mob come a-knocking! I'd tell them to fuck ceart as!

I think the practice of a champion's management demanding future 'options' on an opponent if he beats their man is an odious practice which stops so many great fights being made. It is anti-competitive and should be banned. It is probably the main sticking point preventing Haye agreeing deals for fighting the robot brothers and Khan's people are doing the same thing. The parasites and hangers-on are terrified of losing their meal ticket.

Correct. Not only that if the fight was to happen and McCloskey beat Khan and then fight him again Khan would get more than McCloskey not even a 50-50 split. It is madness why they couldnt sort out this fight.

Prizefighter Light Heavyweights tonight on Sky:

Quarter-Final Draw:

Billy Slate(2-0-0) v Jack Morris(4-1-0)
Llewellyn Davies(5(3 KO)-0-0) v Travis Dickinson(7(3 KO)-0-0)
Tony Dodson(24(12 KO)-6-1) v Michael Banbula(11-25-4)
Joe Smyth(7(4 KO)-1-0) v Menay Edwards(4(4 KO)-1-0)

None really stand out but it should be pretty competitive nonetheless.

Really looking forward to Bradley/Alexander tonight. Did anyone see Bradley at the weigh in? He looked like a man possessed!

It really is it toss up fight this one. I'm leaning towards a close Bradley decision, he'll be looking to impose his will on Alexander. If Alexander can contain Bradley's presence then I'm thinking he can wear him down and get a late stoppage.

If pushed, I'd go with a Bradley UD.

neither of these are huge punchers though, be very tactical and also brilliant. Im very much looking forward to this, after starting boxing training again and getting a pasting the other day sparring i will be watching defence with great intent

Have to say about Prizefighter it is great to see some different faces on the panel. Joe Calzaghe 1 of my all time favourite fighters to come from the UK any young kid starting out in boxing should look at tapes / DVDs of the man. He could fight any sort of fight.

Regarding Alexander v Bradley I would favour Bradley just. It will be close no doubt. Alexander has power to troble Bradley but I dont think he will be able to get a power punch on him to cause Bradley any problems. Bradley on points for me. IF Bradley had the power he would be fighting in the big fights with the likes of Money and Pacman sadly for him the lack of power means lack of the big fights. That night he came over to the UK and beat Witter was brilliant a top class preformace. Something like that tonight again for Bradley will be walking away winner. Whoever wins this is the number 1 in the division.

I have seen worst fights than the Bradley v Alexander fight last night. Both fighters styles ruined the fight. Alexander doing dramatics over the head clashes. Fair enough the first one was bad. He chicken out of the fight going into the 10th round. Bradley deserved the win and he is the best at the weight class no doubting that. His movement in there was good at times and he wanted it too much compared to Alexander. IF a rematch happends I expect the same result a Bradley win.

As for the Undercard the heavyweight who won in 2 rounds Bermane Stiverne looked good a great knock out win. Then Kendal Holts ko aswell was impressive.

As for Khan v Bradley fight I would love to see it and I would favour Bradley over Khan looks strong at the weight and was walking throughh Alexanders punches at times. Also Khans rumoured fights with Ortiz , Murray , Peterson and Katsidis if it is to go by the deal he has offered McCloskey none of these will happen the only 1 that could well happen is Murray as he is a free agent the rest will be looking for more money than McCloskey was looking for. I honestly think Khan will find it hard to make a good fight for April. Fighting either Murray or Katsidis will be a huge ask for those 2 fighters to jump up a weight division for this fight.

Bradley deserved the W, Alexander is a bit of a coward for doing what he did really, never expected him to pull a Victor Ortiz. Bradley does have a habit of going in with the head a bit too much though. I'd like to see Maidana get a shot at either of them, I'd give him a decent chance against both. Khan/Bradley should be decent if they get it on in the summer.

There is uproar over here at the moment because RTE wont be showing the Willie Big Bang Casey v Rigondeaux world title fight. They were offered the fight for free all they had to do was send a crew out to the Citywest to broadcast the fight. Casey seems to be our mordern day Cinderella man burst onto the scene by winning Prizefighter and has only boxed 11 times knocking out 7 on his way and his last fight on RTE did great numbers but was promoted by a rival promoter. There team are now hoping that either Sky or Eurosport come in to show the fight live. My money would be on SKY because of prizefighter but would Sky give a Saturday date to a promotions team that they have never worked with before? I am glad I got tickets for the fight even if Casey is a big underdog.

Amir Khan v Paul McCloskey is signed sealed and delivered. The fight will happen the 16th of April in Manchester. So Khans team must of seen sense and offered a fair deal to get the fight on. It will be on the day of the City v Spurs game I might try and get over for this fight and the game now. I wonder what the cheapest ticket for the fight will be. Also on the undercard is Jamie Kavanagh 1 for the future.

About 35-45 for the nosebleed seats I reckon. I might go to this one as well.

Was looking on the McCloskey website and he will be allocated with X amount of tickets so will have a look there first to see what way they are doing it. Might have to head up to Belfast then over to Manchester if I go that way for the fight depending on the price. See what they have sorted out first.
