The Boxing thread

Yeah, De Gale really is an unlikeable character isn`t he, never taken to him personally, talented I have to say though and probably shades it but hope not, I`ll be hoping Groves does a number on him.

Solis was winning that round pretty easily. Obviously something happened with his leg there, feel sorry for him.

Yeah it buckled after being punched in the head by a fuckin big lump from Russia......

Hmm, maybe... I just think he landed awkwardly on the knee.

Rigondeaux just destroyed Willie Casey in 1. Didn't Leighton go to it?

Just back from the fight. Everyone knew that Willie was in a uphill struggle tonight and what Rigondeaux done was brilliant. The crowd as usual for Irish world title fights were electric. No were near a sell out but I have witnessed in the Super Bamtamweight division 2 great fighters in recent years. Rigo was classy as fuck picked his punches ala Money Mayweather but Casey is full of heart but talent wise just isnt there. I think Euro level is all Casey will ever get to. I know his first defeat but it took balls to fight Rigo just not to the standard.

The undercard was decent Katie Taylor won her fight pretty easy. Anto Fitzgerald beat Belghecham stopped him in I think the 6th round i think after the fight Belghecham went after the ref and hit him and pushed him about I feel his purse may well be taken off him. It was the right decision made. Also on the card a good Irish title bash wasnt a bad night. Brought the da to the fight and his tongue was hanging out at some of the lovely ring girls walking around. 4 rows away from the ring good tickets just a shame the main event didnt go a bit longer.

Roll on another hour for the Magee Fight with Bute. I beleive that Bute looked a bit tight at the weight for the fight. I hope Magee does himself proud. I think there will be highlights on BBC NI tomorrow night and Ringside on Thursday night if people cant see it tonight.

-- Sun Mar 20, 2011 7:13 pm --

Poor old Brian Magee last night against Bute he was doing well until the first knock down and then it went all down hill for him. Its a shame that Bute wasnt apart of the Super 6 as if he was there would of been a better chance of Magee winning a world title. I dont know if he will continue now. It took him some time to come back after getting beaten by Carl Froch and now at 35 I am not too sure he will be willing to try and rebuild at a shot of another World title. Put up a decent showing compared to the Big Bang but both would of had to have had a great showing to cause the upset last night.

Is there any doubt that Yuriorkis Gamboa is the next big thing? If he learns to speak English he could rival Pacquiao for excitement and marketability.

He has power and speed but there are a number of fighters down around the Super Bamtamweight and Featherweight divisions that could well mix it up in the coming years. I think there could well be a good Super 6 made out of some the fighters in the Super Bamtamweight and Featherweight divisions.

Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym who smashed Bernard Dunne in Dublin I think there were rumours he would be going to the US to team up with a big promotor but nothing came of it just yet. This bloke is the best finisher I have seen live strong as a oxx. Also Rigo and all the boxing skills and he will more than likely clean up the Super Bamtamweight division and move up in the next year or 2 and a fight for Gamoba against either of them would be a great fight.

Juanma/Gamboa needs to happen. That one is a toss up.

I think Donaire is above Gamboa in the pecking order tbh. Has that invicible aura about him that few fighters possess.

I am fucking gutted I wont be able to get to the Khan v McCloskey fight now. There is a big piss up sorted out as well which would of been great to get to. They even got a promo for the piss up.

I expect there will be a fight promo before the fight happens from Gorilla productions some of there boxing promos have been class. It will be a lot closer than what some people will think as well and it wouldnt shock me if there was a upset on the night.

Donaire is right there too, I don't think they'd ever fight though as Gamboa would be too big.

The next prizefighter is a International Heavyweight one so far already comfirmed is Big Roggie Martin Rogan former winner. American Kevin Johnson who took Vit Klitschko all the way in 2009. Richel Herisisia from Holland , German Konstantin Airich and Mike Perez the Cork based Cuban. They are hoping to get Roy Jones Jnr as well. Just a heads up no matter who they get. Lump on Mike Perez have seen him in action and boy can he bang just hope he doesnt come in too heavy. This will be his platform to kick on. Over here at the moment we have the 3 Cubans in Perez , Louis Garcia and Alexei Collado who has 13 wins out of 13 with 13 kos at Super Bamtamweight. Luis Garcia has 11 wins out of 11 with 9 kos in light heavyweight and he looks the class part and will more than likely end up fighting in America sooner rather than later. These Cuban lads all could well go to the top.

Anyone watch the Ivan Calderon-Giovani Segura rematch last night? Segura stopped Iron Boy in the 3rd round with more or less the identical attack which finished Calderon in the first fight. Segura just lookd huge next to Calderon and unfortunately the little man's speed and reflexes just aren't what they were and he was incapable of staying out of the way. He actually started off alright last night but as soon as Segura smothered him and got him up against the ropes it was goodnight.

Also last night Sam Peter got decked in pretty special fashion against some big dude called Helenius I think his name was.

Here are videos to both fights.

I watched the Calderon v Segura fight. Some lowish shots from Segura but with him working the body there was not chance for Calderon. I love the lower weights always get a couple of decent fights every year out of them.

At the end of the month they have on the Bamtamweight tournament with Joseph Agbeko v Abner Mares in the final and Vic Darchinyan v Yonnhy Perez in the 3rd place fight and more than likely the winners will meet later in the year.

The end of Calderon's career now hopefully, he's looked ropey for a while and now he's been decisively beaten twice by a guy who deserves to have had the guard passed on to him now.

I didn't watch the first round of fights in that tournament and I don't really know anything about any of those guys other than Darchinyan because of the way he buried Cristian Mijares and then got starched by Donaire. All I've heard off a pal of mine is that Abner Mares is the star of the tournament and is thee one who should progress to bigger and better things after this tournament is done.

Maidana-Morales next weekend, I am fully expecting Maidana to bludgeon Morales to be honest, it could be quite an unpleasant fight to watch for those of us who respect what Morales has given to the sport for such a long time.

Moreales has always been 1 of my favourites down the years with his wars with Barrera and Pacman. I am letting my heart rule my head I would love to see him win the World title he would be the first Mexican to win 4 world titles in different weights I think it is. Thats special just for that alone it would be great and even if he wins it I would love to see him retire as World Champion.

Haye will be at his fighting peak come the night of the fight first week or 2 in training camp by fight night I would guess he would be weighing in at 225 pounds at the most to keep his speed and dynamic to his fight plan. Movement will be key and I think Haye could well get the win it will have to be by KO if it is in Germany.

Also expect a high numbers of Irish fight fans for the Khan fight. Just seen that Tyson Fury has been added to the card to face Hasim Rahman also Rendal Munroe will also be on the bill this fight card might be the best card of the year from England. Also Irish fighters Jamie Kavanagh and Andy Murray also on the bill.

1 more Macklin v Sturm in late June or Early July for the WBA title in Germany seems it will be announced in the coming week or so. A great chance for Macklin a win here and it could open up huge fights for him would love to see him do it.
