The Boxing thread

Mayorga is a joke, he sells tickets because he acts like an idiot not because he's a good fighter. I hope Cotto gives him a serious beating.

Cotto fight isnt on Sky tonight. Instead Sky has decided to show Vit Klitschko next week instead against Solis. Tonight Sky are showing Ricky Burns world title fight with Laryea if Burns avoids the wild bombs he should take this fight on the cards by a wide margin.
On the undercard is DeGale against some bum in a warm up fight before him and George Groves fight each other I would expect Groves will be in the crowd tonight. Also if Sky show him watch out for Stephen Ormond tonight he had a couple of fights in the US before signing with Warren a decent prospect.

The American cards Lee v McEwan this could well be the fight of the night my head says Lee late stopage but Lee is 1 fight away from fighting for a World title if he wins this he will get his shot. I just hope that he is over looking McEwan as it could well cost him big.

Marthinez fight easy nights work for Marthinez I think he could win by a KO tonight.
Cotto v Mayorga I would tend to go for Cotto here BUT it wouldnt shock me if Mayorga rolls back the clock and gets the win.

Also next weekend if you dont fancy watching Vit Klitschko then RTE.ie will be showing the World Title fight of Wille Big Bang Casey v Rigondeuax there was fears over here that the fight wouldnt be shown but the state broadcaster gave into pressure from boxing fans and the writen press to show the fight. So look out for a link for the fight next weekend before I head out to watch it live.

Mayorga's trash talking skills went out of the window a long time ago, he just recycles the same old phrases. I'd be surprised if Cotto doesn't take him out easily tonight.

Always look forward to watching Martinez, he's one of my favourite fighters at the moment. Slick as fuck but with the knockout power. Sky should start picking up some of his fights now he's P4P #3 in the rankings.

Premier Sports subscription channel have the Martinez and Lee fights, it's Sky 433 if you have the subscription.

Next couple of weeks they have a couple of World title fights. Its Setanta rebranded as over here we are getting all the American fights for free thats why they are going for fights with Irish boxers on the cards. So to sell it to Sky customers over here. This weekend they have Andy Lee and next weekend they have Brian Magee v Bute for the World title. Only a couple of quid for a months sub and this month alone it is seems well worth it they also have the WBS all the best ams fighting with out headgear and vests some of the fights had been decent so far.

Just done a quick bet there Lee , Cotto and Marthinez all to win tonight by stopage keep me interest in the fights more.

Not seen the Martinez fight but I believe he totally outclassed Dzinziruk.

I watched the Cotto fight and wasn't totally impressed really. His jab alone probably won the fight clearly for Cotto and the left hook to knock the fight out of Mayorga at the end was top class. However I wanted to see more use of the right hand from Cotto. He had surgery to remove scar tissue from his right shoulder, which should in theory have given him greater freedom turn the shoulder to develop more power with the right hand. He mad multiple chances to use it last night after timing Mayorga perfectly with the jab and creating the opening for a big power shot but they very rarely came. He also had spells of being flat footed and basically staying too long in the same spot and almost helping Mayorga to establish the range with which ti wing away with his wild bombs. Cotto nearly paid for that in the 7th when Mayorga drilled him to the body and that definitely hurt Cotto.

Mayorga ain't an easy guy to look good against, indeed Shane Mosley looked like shit against him before going on to destroy Margarito in the next fight so maybe it's a little harsh to dumb down Cotto's chances in a rematch against Marg, but I was expecting to see a more polished performance from Cotto than he produced. It wasn't bad by any means but there were vulnerabilities there that better fighters will expose. I didn't expect Cotto to stop Mayorga last night purely because of Mayorga's size, Cotto's punches don't have the same impact at a higher weight. I think he should stay clear of Martinez personally. He has a chance of boxing to a UD in a rematch with Margarito, but a rematch with Pacquiao would be equally as unpleasant as the first fight, that's how I see it right now anyway.

I was really impressed by Martinez again, as the HBO crew said, it's very hard to look good against Dzinziruk. Be interested to see him fight Angulo next, then probably the Cotto/Marg II winner.

Cotto I thought did quite well, brilliant display of class at the end going straight over to Mayorga to check on his condition after all the pre fight stuff. I hope he beats Margarito in the rematch but it's difficult to see anything other than the outcome of the 1st fight for me at the moment.

Fight of the night Lee v McEwan it swung one way to the other. McEwan looks a decent fighter and I will be interested to see how he comes back after his first defeat. Lee can bang a bit and it was a nice win for Lee being back on American tv he needed to get a win it was a good fight for those watching at home. Also I won on my bet last night a cool €68 not too bad leading into next week all money is welcome.

Marthinez looked classy would love to see him fight a Pacman or Money but I dont think either fighter will take the risk on fighting him. So if Bute beats Magee next week maybe Bute v Marthinez could get the go ahead even if it is at a catch weight fight.

Bute is way too big for Martinez surely. He only moved up to 160 last year didn't he?

Bute has been fighting at Super Middleweight for a couple of years now. The thing is for Martinez if he fights Pacman it will be at a catch weight more so in favour of Pacman. A fight with Bute could well be made at the Super Middleweight weight if Matinez is willing to go up the weight and fight at the weight but like Pacman if people want to see it then they could do it at a catch weight. I am not a big fan of catch weight fights dont think any belts should be on line as it will always favour 1 fighter over another. The hardest thing will be trying to get Bute to fight outside of Canada it must of been years since he boxed outside of Canada.

No, I meant Martinez. He's only had a couple of fights at middleweight, he's been a 154 fighter for years. Bute is way too big for him imo.

Mat Macklin has been added to the Khan v McCloskey card he is fighting Khoren Gevor a final elminator for the WBA title and a fight with Felix Strum. It has a real Irish feel for those going with Macklin , Andy Murray and Jamie Kavanagh all added to the card. So for all those going this card seems to have a couple of decent fighters on it for once.

Looking forward to seeing Scott Quigg on the Khan undercard, he looks like he could have a big future if he keeps improving.

This weekend I fancy Vitali on points against Solis. Think Solis might have enough experience as an amateur to stay out of trouble for 12 rounds, especially as Vitali ain't going to pressure him that much. Vitali will just use his reach as always to stick a right hand in Solis' face any time he tries to make a move.

Hopefully Solis is actually shedding a few pounds for this fight, it's embarrassing for the sport to see these fat guys challenging for world titles.

Quigg not too sure about. Over here we have Carl Frampton and he has been calling out for a fight with Quigg but Hatton wants nothing to do with it. 2 young fighters it has to happen but I think Hatton wants to keep Quiggs 0 for as long as they can. Frampton was offered a fight with Kiko for the European title but turned it down as they were looking for a load of options on his next fight it wasnt worth there while to take the fight on just yet. So he is looking at maybe a fight for the British title then move up I think it depends on Booth dropping the belts because he is now fighting Kiko for the Superbamtamweight title.

Yeah I've heard about Frampton, he's beaten a few of the guys that Scott has beaten but in more decisive fashion from what I've heard.

Obviously the level is hard to determine right now because of his age but Scott is very, very good from what I've seen of him. He looks explosive when he throwa his punches, looks very classy and quick. I haven't really seen him hurt yet either. I've heard that he's been over to LA a few times to train at the Wildcard gym and he's kicked arse in sparring, which is pretty impressive because the sparring won't be a walk in the park in that environment.

Hopefully Frampton and Scott can fight somewhere down the line. Think Scott isd definitely looking to move up a level or two in the next year or so.

Maybe it will happen but if it does I would fancy Carl to win and maybe by a KO. Carl may not be heading over to the Wildcard but the sparring he has had with the likes of Jason Booth last year has got him to a higher level at a quicker time. I would fancy Carl to beat most of the British fighters out there now with maybe the exception of Munroe. Just look at how quick he took apart Vorinin and Reid compared to Quigg and he took those on at a earlier stage as well only 9 fights in and he is the best prospect I have seen coming from Ireland in a long time who hits hard and boxes well and has that something about him he can go to the top and fight for a World title within 2 years easy. I'm not knocking Quigg but what I have seen from both fighters I would feel that Frampton is the man out of the 2 that could go that bit more and hit the top first.

Heavy hands definitely go a long way to securing more decisive results especially at the level that Frampton and Quigg are at now. Scott isn't hugely powerful so he relies on speed and movement to pick his opponents apart. I was there when he fought Gavin Reid and he really took him apart and punched the guy to a standstill before the ref stopped it. He is a class act for sure so Frampton would have his hands full with him, and I am sure the same can be said visa versa. It could be a nice little rivalry brewing there for sure.

Did anyone watch Ringside in the week? James DeGale made himself look like a total helmet when put in the studio alongside George Groves. DeGale for me takes the fight by mid-rounds KO, but Groves certainly came across as the more intelligent and coherent of the two.
