The Boxing thread

Was sat with some Irish lads for the BJS v Lee fight, they were saying that Lee v Macklin in Ireland would be next up after this loss, think Lee would be to strong for Macklin if it happened. Don't think Saunders needs Lee or Eubank jnr and will look for bigger things, he's deserved his chance.

Yeah Adam Booth will get the best out of Burnett and keep him grounded, Booth is a class act and can see there's bags of potential there. Another welterweight to keep an eye on is Alex Saucedo, who's 16-0. Mexican kid fighting out of Oklahoma. Will be interesting to see if he can push on this year, solid combinations and cuts down the ring well.

Oh I know a few over here who would love to see the Lee v Macklin fight it would sell big. Also it would be a good market for Matchroom and Hearn to get in big time. He has Jono Carroll and Luke Keeler 2 good lads who are trained by Packie Collins. Also with the Olympics coming up there is a lot of talented Irish lads waiting for the right deal to turn pro be it Paddy Barnes , Micheal Conlon and to some extent Joe Ward all Rio bound who will end up Pro after the games. Get the foothold in Dublin and the fights will sell well. You could well have the 2 Booth fighters on the show aswell as some heavy hitters over here Irish boxing is waiting to boom and it will happen sooner rather than later. Jason Quigley is doing great things in the US add into that Stephen Ormond too really think Quigley is going to be up there in the big fights in the coming years the lads the best from Ireland to recently go pro from the last batch of ams.

The reason Khan keeps avoiding Brook, despite the huge monies to be made, is because he knows a defeat will be the end of him and he will be less of a name to US promoters. Khan knows he can keep Brook waiting as the demand for the fight will always be there. Loses to Brook first up though, and he would need to rebuild. Again.

Where Garcia is concerned, I think Khan can beat him in a rematch now he's under Virgil Hunter, as the last time they met, despite him boxing Garcia's head off, Khan just didn't have any ring IQ and when he got tagged he went into brawler mode which he simply cannot do with that chin of his. He's more switched on under Hunter and I think he would regoup after getting tagged rather than standing and trading.

Brook can also beat Garcia IMO, as he's also an excellent boxer and could potentially jab his head off.

Garcia v Thurman is what I want to see.

The Groves fight on Saturday looks embarrassing. There's tickets being advertised everywhere and the venue holds something like 6,000. He's been in decline since the Froch fights. I imagine he'll win comfortably but if he doesn't do something special in the next year or so then he's finished. Sad because I was a fan.

Agreed. He needs something special.

From Wembley arena to struggling to fill a 6 thousand seat venue (with cheap noseblood seats I assume). Was he a charlatan all along who got lucky!?

To be fair its a disgrace of a headline, would have made so much more sense on an under card but I guess George is too big in his own head for that now.

I think Garcia is a tougher fight for Khan than Brook. Khan has improved under Hunter no doubt but Garcia looks better since they last fought. I'm a fan of Khan and with Garcia more comfortable making weight at 147 it makes for a great rematch.

As leighton posted, some great fights out there at welterweight, even with Floyd & Manny out of the mix.

I'm not Garcia's biggest fan and I have no idea how he has remained undefeated given how close some of his supposed gimme fights have been. But, I would still favour him to stop Khan again. Khan was winning the rounds against Garcia back in 2012, but once Garcia starter timing him and punching with him, it was all over quickly. I think Khan would need a totally different rythmn to stand a chance. And his inactivity isn't helping him either. Someone will beat Garcia soon enough mind.

Garcia looks polished at 147lb and doesn't get enough credit in my book. I think Danny beats Thurman if it happens, although he hits as hard as any at welter I think Garcia would stay out of range and outbox him. I think Khan is a more interesting fight with Virgil in his corner. Last time out Khan decided to stand and trade with Garcia and got beat up, be interesting to see what he's learnt. Tough last fight against Algieri but against Devon Alexander looked sharp and won every round bar one.

Bit early to say whether Liam Smith will make it at welterweight, I think Callum is a potential world champion at 168lb, fantastic jab and jumped straight on Rocky Fielding in his last fight, amazing finish.
I think Thurman beats him up, although we haven't really seen him tested yet either. I just think Garcia is in too many close fights with guys he should be comprehensively beating. he really lose against Herrera and could easily have been on the wrong end of the decision against Peterson. He needs to fight someone live. Khan and Matthyse are the only two really. Be interesting to see what happens if he fights Khan in the summer. If Khan beats him, it probably ties them both up for a third fight and that puts Khan - Brook off until Summer 2017, and that's not good.

Its common pratice as the long term champions dont do mandatory fights as often. Look at Wilder he has to fight his mandatory or he loses his title. Only a unification fight will save him from fighting his mandatory. Look at Frampton and Quigg both of those guys will in theory will loose at least 1 belt when they fight each other as there is a mandatory against either Wake or Rigondeaux up next. The WBA only have themselves to blame as Rigo shouldnt of been stripped and he should be the Super Champion. Crazy Scott Quigg is classed as there champion when he hasnt beaten Salinas in the first fight Draw and handed the title and never boxed Rigo and handed that title a lucky fighter it seems.
I know, it's just a ball ache.

As for Quigg and Frampton, I think either of them get beaten badly by Leo or Rigo. They'd be well advised to stay where they are and hope Leo and Rigo both move up for one of the super fights against Lomachenko or Gary Russell, or even Walters.

I can actually see Haskins or McDonnell moving up to fight either Quigg or Frampton or maybe catch-weighting Lee Selby because lets face it, he also loses if he fights any live fighter at 126.
