The Boxing thread

The TV ratings for the Framton v Santa Cruz fight numbers are in and it averaged 480,000 viewers on Showtime. Which makes that fight the 3rd most watched fight on Showtime this year. Also the ratings dont provide the about of people watching online sadly. I wonder when Carl fights again in the US how much those numbers will change after the Santa Cruz fight.

Gotta say, was impressed with Frampton. I actually had him losing the fight by 2 rounds although some of the rounds were incredibly close and very easily could have been scored the other way. I would love to see a rematch. It certainly wasn't a robbery and I can't really argue with anyone scoring it as a close win either way.

One thing that was clear was how much Frampton really needed to move up. He had much more in the tank than he had against Quigg and as a result, looked miles better.

Overall great performance and excited to see who he goes for next. Would like to see a Selby fight I think. Russell jr is a tough fight style wise given his speed and slickness, although if Frampton can put his foot down and make Russell work at a fast pace, who knows. I do think Selby is the way to go followed by maybe even a rematch with Santa Cruz or Quigg, followed by a fight with someone like Josh Warrington....if he is still knocking on the door in 12-18 months time. 3 very winnable and lucrative fights.

I like Golovkin but I really think people try and pad his credentials too much, it's not that he has no skill clearly he does but he isn't popular because he's shown technical brilliance or ringsmanship like a Mayweather, Ward or a Rigondeux he's nowhere near them on either of those attributes... it really is his power and his knockouts without them we simply wouldn't be talking about P4P at all IMO. Also when Lemieux is the best fighter you've beat you can't really say you have nothing to prove(and this fight will just prove what we already know he's too powerful for someone like Brook), he will catch Brook eventually by closing off the ring and going to the body to slow him up enough to start landing much in the same way Canelo did against Khan. Also even if his amateur record is impressive, it's bizarre to me we have a 36y.o fighter who people want to claim is P4P#1 and his amateur record is being used at all, that's the domain of early 20s fighters who you're making an argument they are just world level for never mind P4P.

Ward is back in action at the weekend can't say I'm that excited for that fight either though from what I've seen, we really need to see bigger fights being made for certain fighters nobody is being tested anymore. The Frampton fight was a nice treat at the weekend what a difference it makes.
Yeah I disagree with folk having GGG as p4p #1. He hasn't really beaten anyone above B- standard to be honest. I do think his ringmanship and balance is excellent though. He cuts off the ring perfectly and walks his opponents into constant danger. He has excellent footwork and is always balanced perfectly. None of those skills are as eye catching as the more athletic gifts of speed and what not, but I do think he is much much more than just power. He has some massively under rated abilities which I think are often over looked because of his power. It's just too bad he is wasting his prime beating up the Lemiuexs and the under sized Kell Brooks of the world. He should really be moving up and seeking challenges at 168. I've lost a lot of respect for him for even taking this fight. It's a shame because we should have had two evenly matches super fights involving Brook, Khan, Canelo and GGG, yet we are getting two joke shop fights.

No idea why you should think he should move up 8lb to super middle, he would be a lot shorter than most of the contenders, middle is the maximum he should go. FMJ moved up to a weight where he then failed to have the power to knock people out, he is better being a real undisputed champion as there are not many in boxing. There is no dominating boxer in SM to fight either now.

You can't compare GGG to Floyd. Floyd moved from super featherweight to light middle throughout his career.

The reason GGG should think about moving up is simple. Two of his mandatories are pure garbage and the other is Daniel Jacobs. Jacobs would be half interesting. Failing that Eubank Jr and Saunders are the only things left for him given Canelo's reluctance. Despite Eubank's mouth, he has done very little to suggest he is a realistic threat to GGG. Saunders is clearly of similar standard, so I don't really see the challenge.

So, if he is wanting to chase greatness, he should be challenging himself, and his bigger challenges are at 168. De Gale and Ramirez are both challenges. Even Callum Smith or George Groves would be fairly interesting...at least on par with Eubank and Saunders, with the added threat - with them being naturally bigger. I'd even rather see him in with Abraham or Bute over Saunders to be honest, just to see how he deals with natural weight disadvantage (if it is even apparent). He's certainly not at a debilitating height disadvantage at 168. He's taller than Abraham, an inch shorter than Groves and 1.5 inch shorter than De Gale. Hardly a problem. There's only really Ramirez and Bute who have a few inches on him, but he's expecting Brook to deal with a similar disadvantage so it would be shame for him to be hypocritical about it.

Moving up is certainly less ridiculous than expecting Brook to put in a competitive display against him. Who cares about being an undisputed champion when the division is garbage? It's a sad state of affairs when the supposed p4p champions biggest wins are Lemieux, Rubio and Martin Murray.

There are some that believe Froch ducked GGG(which is bullshit as much of a knob Froch turned into when he got success he has a granite chin and wouldn't duck anyone he retired and decided to stay retired) who apparently wanted that fight to happen, he's not small at the weight he's at so he could move up but he will need to rely on his boxing more because he'll find more that will beable to trade with him up there. Groves vs GGG anyone? If people are expecting Canelo to prove his worth being the naturally smaller fighter(I want that fight to happen btw), shouldn't the same apply to GGG if the the fight was an attractive one for the right money?

How do th Republic see Frampton Leighton? Just seen it on a boxing forum being suggested that Carl doesn't/won't get massive support as he from the North and the whole travelling Irish thing is over egged because of this.

Personally I thought it was very much like rugby union for the pads when it came to boxing, Ireland is all of Ireland.

I have been saying for a while that Frampton needed the move up in weight. He hasnt been the same at Super Bamtamweight since the Avalos win. Santa Cruz stats are a bit mad he throws a lot but he misses a lot and Frampton made him look average , and per cent that landed in every area Carl per cent wise landed more. No wonder Santa Cruz moved up to get away from Rigo. But Carl was chasing the Santa Cruz fight for a long time.
As for next Quigg fight wont sell after the first 1. There is no money in either of the fights with Quigg or Selby as they dont have a great following and Carl would maybe demand a bigger split in any fight. Sure Carl can pick his next fight and its got to be best for him and his family. So I wouldnt be shocked to see a Santa Cruz rematch again.

Your correct. Ireland is a whole when it comes to most sports apart from football. Also Carl is rated highly down here and a lot of Irish fight fans have travelled over the years to watch all of our world champions from South and the North from Barry McGugian , Steve Collins , Andy Lee and Benard Dunne and Frampton will have a great following with the supporters travelling all over the world to see them. Carl will get more media attention over here down South now and in the build up to fights he has been on Irish tv down here. He isnt the type to do too much tv but i would nearly see being asked to do some tv work here for the Olympics with a lot of fighters from Belfast at Rio fighting Carl could well pop up on tv here if he wants but its not his nature to do a lot of tv.

@leighton I still think there's money to be made in a rematch with Quigg and I actually think a rematch would be great. Frampton would be the favourite but it would be good to see, especially considering how much the first fight caught fire over the last half. obviously Quigg needs to bounce back with a good win or two but there is definitely money to be made especially if the fight was on Sky Box Office as part of maybe an AJ card.

His other options hardly seem that lucrative really. He'd receive a bigger split of the purse against Santa Cruz in a rematch, but other than that, Rigo and Russell Jr are very difficult to win and also probably not very financially rewarding. I do think the Selby fight is a natural fight to make. I actually think a bit down the line, Josh Warrington at Elland Road is a very easy payday for someone with the profile of Frampton.

Ward moved out of SM because there were no good fights to be had. The optimum height for a SM is 6'1 to 6'2" so h would be giving a lot of reach to any good champion like Ward and Frotch who no longer bother there for a reason.

In England names like De Gale and Groves may be hyped up, but they are no better than who he is already beating and would not draw flies in the US. Don't believe Box Nation and Sky.
