The Boxing thread

On the news bbc NI it stated that Khan v McCloskey could be made for April. It seems his fight he has lined up might not be made and the that they are talking with McCloskeys people about a fight. It would be great for McCloskey as he deserves a shot at a title and what a great couple of weeks for Irish boxing with the Casey World title fight in Dublin on Paddys Week and Magee fighting the same night for his World title fight and now hopefully McCloskey v Khan it would be great for all 3 fighters.

How did I know Leighton would be in here talking about Khan/McCloskey, haha.

Good news, they said on ringside last night that Sky would be showing Bradley/Alexander. Bad news is that apparently, less than 500 tickets have been sold for it. Bare in mind the fight's being held at the 80k capacity Detroit Silverdome. Don King drops a bollock yet again, let's move it away from St Louis where Alexander sells shitloads of tickets and put it in a run down area who were never big on their boxing in the first place. Great idea.

By Skys Schedule it says the fight is on 10 pm on Sunday night I thought they said they were showing it live on Ringside. That boxing programe is a fucking joke dont like it. They need to get the big man on it Bunce he knows his shit big time.

Also hoping that Ricky and Barry got a talking about a Quigg v Frampton fight. Frampton is a class act the highlights they showed on Sky last night were on his first 2 fights he has come a long long way from then more power better shots yet to see him getting tagged but what Barry said last night he could well be right and Frampton could win the European title this year.

I watched Ringside and enjoyed it in regards the Quigg/Frampton situation both Ricky and Barry bigged up their own fighters rather than pushing for a fight. Should be some great fights this year I personally hope John Murray gets a world title shot and Haye fights a Klitchsko.

Frampton looks very good Leighton as you have always said I reckon he would K/O Quigg, does anyone reckon Hatton has a chance against Saul Alvarez?

got a little game for 2011 for you:

Pick 1 British boxer, 1 American and 1 Rest of the World.

You're allowed 1 world champion.

Quite simple you get the points the fighter scores in his fights, plus 100 points for any form of knockout, 50 points for a victory on points and -75 for a defeat.

Leighton can just pick 3 Irish guys if he wants.

Mat Hatton hasnt got a chance in hell against Saul Alvarez cant knock the bloke for taking the fight on if it gets signed and sealed. If he wins it honestly it puts him up there with the best in the division. I dont even think he is the best in UK with Kell Brook about he is the best from Europe. I didnt rate Brook but since the Jennings fight Kell has stepped up.

John Murray I beleive is a free agent now so I would be interested in seeing who signs him up from Matchroom , Hatton or Warren one of them should take him on. He is 1 fight away from a World title fight. Rumours are that Kevin Mitchell wants to fight Murray for his belt. So I hope he gets sorted out asap as he cant delay for long.

As for the Jackal Frampton I know I harp on about him but the lad is the most exciting fighter I have seen from Ireland in a long time. We have a couple knocking about at the moment in Frampton , Dean Byrne and Jamie Kavanagh who both are in the Wildcard and doing well. Also Warren has 2 good Irish lads with him in Ormond and Gary Spike O Sullivan under his promotions he has the fighters to do a card in Ireland take those 2 and add Macklin and Frankie Gavin there would be a high demand to see a show. Irish boxing is on a high and is only going to get better and better in the years to come if some of the ams over here turn pro they could do very well.

Would love to see Murray - Mitchell. be a right scrap.

Think Khan is too good for McCloskey to be honest. Peterson turned down the £200k offer though so i guess Khan has limited options. It could be an ok fight, and McCloskey can be awkward but Khan should figure him out quickly enough. I'd be surprised if Khan didn't have him out of there by around 7 or 8 rounds.

I think it might go to the cards to be honest with you if they did fight. Paulie is a fighter style that Khan hasnt boxed in a long time. Paulie movement is great different type of style his reflefs are good avoiding shots from close range and picks his punches well. So I wouldnt say Khan would have his all during the fight Paulie may not have the greatest of power but if Khan is walking onto some of his shots it could cause him problems. The Breen gym will get him in great shape for the fight if it happens and I would love him to do it but he needs a KO but doesnt have the power to do it.

Having said that, if he hits Khan clean, Khan could go. The shot he ko'd Lauri with was decent enough.

I just think Khan has the ability to stop anyone at 140. He puts his punches together so well. I just worry about him when punches start coming back. If McCloskey can deal with the speed and the output, he could do well, but i don't think he will. It's a big step up for him, but i do think he at least deserves a shot.

I agree Leighton that Hatton doesn't stand a chance but at least he is stepping up to the plate. In regards Murray it looks like Mr Warren will promote him and I reckon he would beat Mitchell inside 8 rounds but it would be a great fight.

Shame Khan wouldn't give Katsidis a chance.

That fight was never going to happen after the last fight they aint going to take a risk on Khan in another hard fight not back to back so this in there view is a low risk fight. I will find out more over the coming few days from the boxing jurnos over here always decent with there info and are normally right.

To be fair to haye, it is a nightmare when fighting one of the brothers. Their contracts are so complex it's unbelievable! Beat one brother and you have to fight the other brother, who in turn has a rematch clause. These lads are destroying heavyweight boxing at the moment. The best scenario would be, for haye to beat wlad, then vitali, then retire and free the belts up for the 'new' generation to fight over.
The multi million pound contracts that Haye walks away from, only to kid the public into buying his next fights against no-hopers.

I have freinds who don't watch boxing but know only of Haye and Khan so rely on Sky to tell them about their opponents. It's fair to say that Sky are in on this sham by David Haye as well.

Lets be honest Wald Klitschko has a lot to answer for in his part of the deal. It was all sorted the fight was to be made only from him to pull the plug not Haye.

There could be a decent fight on the way for Mat Macklin he is rumoured to be in line to fight Winky Wright on the undercard of the Marquez v Morales fight on April 9. Would be a good name for Macklin to have on his CV if he gets a win and it will get a strong following from the US fight fans if he does win it. With Warren loosing the purse for the Barker fight this could be another option for Macklin so I would expect him to jump at the Winky Wright fight first than the Barker fight.

Good name for Macklin, but Winky needs to pack it in. I think Macklin just needs to throw a lot of punches. Winky will cover up and not throw back, and Macklin could win enough rounds to win a decision.

In theory, i guess that's always been the way to beat Winky.

Maybe so but Macklin didnt look to good in his last fight seemed like he ran out of gas in the last couple of rounds. So Winky in my opinion has a great chance if he takes it to the latter rounds.

I don't think Winky will have anything left in the latter rounds to be fair. He's an old man. He'll be 40 this year. He's not won a fight for over four years.
