The British Monarchy

Ok, issue here i think is that you have two sides looking at this from two very different angles. One side see's an old lady who has served her country and feel for her and her family the other side just sees what she represents and all what that institution has done across the globe.

You’ve pretty much nailed that tbf mate, rightly or wrongly I’ve always thought I’ve been a pretty good judge of character and whenever I’ve seen footage of the Queen over the years I’ve thought she just seems a nice decent person, friendly, sense of humour, loves her family, she was a huge animal lover like I am and I think that says a lot about a person also, but I think it’s the behaviour and entitlement I’ve seen from others and obviously things I’ve heard of the others that has kept me from warming to the others or the Royal family

Then obviously when you see the financial things that go on, the one that’s come out now about they will pay no inheritance tax which really hits members of the public who don’t have much to start with, those things just grate with me a bit

Think Voltaire (?) got it about right, "I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it". That Celtic banner was infantile and tasteless for many but start censoring stuff like that and we are on a very slippy slope imo.
I agree, it's a very hard choice as to where the dividing line is between freedom of
choice and words and what is offensive to others.

If you watched the Louis Theroux documentary about the US Phelps family and their church that picketed service peronnal funerals you can see this taken to the extreme.

I would argue the main objection to the monarchy is not the monarchy itself, but against the so-called 'royal prerogative' which the PM exercises (nominally on the King's behalf) and which gives massive powers such as the right to declare war and enter into treaties with other countries without any parliamentary involvement.

This enables elected dictatorship, which is made worse by our ludicrous, outdated voting system giving absolute control to a minority of votes. In my view, it is way more important to abolish this aspect of the 'constitution' than to get shut of the royals themselves. But I am a strong believer in constitutional reform - it's about 200 years overdue.

I don't particularly have a deep connection with Charles, I do think the monarchy is a good thing and also respect others who hold it in greater reverence than myself.

Can I ask what is your deep connection with 11 football players who pull on a blue shirt ? Are you related to any of them, do you know any of them personally? You can see where this is going cant you, some things we do or hold in high esteem as people are illogical?
I don’t have one really, I won’t be demanding people respect them on their funeral days, mostly because I won’t know when it will have been held.

The country as a whole won’t stop and I’m struggling to see an apt comparison.

Oh come on Alan. You do see the comparison. Your devotion to a football team and others devotion to a monarchy, that neither of you have a close personal connection with. I have a much deeper affection for City than I do for the monarchy by the way. Early on in my Marriage my wife soon worked out that it was wise to check the final score before I came home so she would know what kind of mood I would be I for the next few days. ;-) I can't really explain why it means so much to me to someone who doesn't follow football.

How do you feel about Wilfried Bony? Are you waiting for the call to go to his funeral?

Of course you aren’t. He was rubbish and no longer plays for us.

You can’t transfer the monarchy. They don’t really do very much nowadays, but people still enjoy the pomp and ceremony. That’s pretty much it.

If/when Charles starts chatting politics/climate change, it’ll be seconds before he’s told to “stick to being king”.

If you shout at your wife because City have lost, that doesn’t make you a bigger blue, it makes you somebody who can’t control their emotions very well.

I‘m not sure I’ve ever done that, but have said on occasion that we have lost contentiously, can you give me 10 minutes to process my annoyance please.

The royal family will never evoke such emotions. VAR have never changed the outcome of a royal occasion, they very rarely score own goals, noncing aside.

People love watching the pomp, I doubt many under 60 have a royal teatowel.
