I did wonder why they all disappeared, however was the funding from government? If so why? These companies make enough money maybe they should be funding them.

You must remember how privatisation works

1/ sell something that the public owns to "the public"
2/ ensure that "public" that now owns it is a large corporation ( with Conservative leanings )
3/ sell the profits to this new "public" but retain any liabilities and costs in the ownership of the Govt - ie all the risks remain with the real public
