Sunak is much more stupid than I thought he was. How thick do you have to be to back yourself into a corner by saying "I won't back down." Virtually every dispute in history has to be settled by compromise. He seems to think it's still the 1980s and he's Margaret Thatcher taking on Scargill, the "big bad wolf." This corrupt government can't expect to win a PR battle with nurses and ambulance staff.

You are right but I think there are plenty of people within the Tory party who are disgusted with their own party which has essentially imploded.

I agree Sunak is pandering to the right wing rump of his own party but it is electoral suicide. The extremists on the right (and the left for that matter) are a tiny fraction of UK voters. Going to war with the nurses is just plain crazy even for this current governnment.

But he has no choice. The Tories know they will be out of power soon so the best they can do is consolidate what little they have. A base is a base no matter how small you may perceive them. Come next election or two after the one two years from now, many will have forgotten how terrible the Tories are and they will be competitive again. The thing about the right wing compared to the left is their base is very motivated. As long as you feed them red meat they will come accordingly.

Yes, they have lost the support of the majority of those who may have voted for them. Nevertheless, those voters will be fickle enough to vote for them again, especially if Rwanda goes ahead.

It didn't work for them in Scotland where they are now extinct. If they ignore the centre ground they are doomed. Most of their ageing base will be dead before they next get a sniff of power.
