The dream for many people in this country has been to buy a house and then sit on your arse and watch as it triples and quadruples in value.
The only snag is this is unsustainable unless people's incomes also triple and quadruple.
Sooner or later there is a nasty 'correction' in the market. The problem is, it's very hard to escape the trap. You either buy and take on a mortgage (which can soar) or you private rent. In the latter case, many/most landlords have mortgages too, so they set higher and higher rents to keep up.
The absence of genuinely affordable and secure rental housing in this country is a national scandal. But neither of the three main parties has any intention of doing anything about it. Because it would lead to a fall in house prices and a large proportion of voters (especially the well off) would not like that - to say the least.
