The Curious Case of Dele Alli | Emotional Overlap interview (p 19)

Kleberson, Babel, Joe Cole, Robinho, Walcott, Bentley, Bendtner and our own Mangala all flattered to deceive and all of them fell way short of what might have been predicted.

Joe Cole had a very good career. Are we talking about the same guy?

Did very well with Chelsea and was one of national teams better performers around the mid 2000's

3 time premier legue winner and played over 50 times for England and scored double figures. He moved on from Chelsea at 29 or 30 but he had an excellent career there.

Apart from probably not having a glittering end to his career in his 30s, I'd say he pretty much maximised his ability.

Talented kid who let all go to waste. Probably the worst part of Dele's case is it wasn't about injuries, but more to do with his attitude. He will probably serve as a case study for the younger footballing generation of not losing your focus while at the top. Of course he is not the only example in football but probably one of the most significant in recent years.

I'm sure most of us have seen the clip with his one to one meeting with Mourinho and Mourinho is basically telling him he's going to waste his career and talent and you can see Dele doesn't give a shit.

A link for those who haven't..

Someone mentioned Danny Rose playing for Watford, but he doesn't. Watford terminated his contract in September 2022, and he hasn't played for anyone since. That's half a year without a club for a 32-year ex-England international who used to play for Spurs for a dozen years.

The crazy thing is, he has probably earned enough money already to live a comfortable life and even more bizarre will have tv/media companies chasing after him with bags of cash when he does finally hang up his boots.

It's crazy how a waste of talent can be so handsomely rewarded.

There are at least 3 different categories with this. The first one being mentioned is careers cut short by injuries - not much anyone can do about these. The second one is that players just don't get any better and that can start at any age.
Then there is the third that Ali falls into. Just getting bored and falling out of love with the game or getting into other shit. Difficult to have any sympathy with the last category.
