Was anyone actually surprised by what happened today?

Yeah, I was. I really thought we'd put our issues aside for 90 minutes and just play, given the opposition.

I actually think there was plenty of effort there, it just reinforced for me that the problems are... let's say ideological... rather than motivational.

My personal view this summer is don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, the baby being the players. Someone like Ancelotti would have got a lot more out of this group than Manuel has managed to do.

So assuming Manuel is toast, some of the things I would like us to do:

1) Swap Dzeko and Nasri (reluctantly on Nasri) as part of the Pogba deal. Not sure this is realistic given who will be after him? Should be our top priority though. And like when we went for Yaya, Tevez, Silva or Aguero, just do what it takes to get it done.
2) Let Yaya go to Inter (with our thanks for some awesome memories, not into this ridiculous demonising of our legends).
3) Try and find a buyer for Navas, and buy a decent replacement. Reus. Sanchez. Someone world class.
4) I'd be tempted to keep Jovetic under a better manager. See how Sergio, Bony and Jovetic do as the main strikers, bring through one of the kids.
5) Work with the defence to make them solid again. Abandon this disastrous philopsophy, or at least temper it until we have the squad/manager to make it work. Bring Denayer and Rekik into the squad.
6) Sell Caballero and look for a young English goalkeeper as backup.

Completely agree with the above. Our performance at a strategic level has been woeful ever since our first Title. But before we go and rely on the cheque book as the answer I think we should take a closer look at today and the lessons to learn. This afternoon we were well beaten regardless of refereeing decisions by effectively the same players who we demolished last season. For all of their spending the starting line up of the rags this afternoon didn't include ANY of their big name signings in the summer. Only two, Harrera and Blind started today but the difference wasn't the players. The difference was the shape, the discipline, the understanding and desire of how to win the game and as a result of the previous their belief and desire.

This comes from the manager and not the cheque book.

How much did we get for Rodwell and Garcia ?

The original post is spot on, and yes we did bring in money for Rodwell and Garcia which has helped our finances, but we aren't getting value for money for the cash we spend. I agree that some players need to be moved on and despite them having four year deals, then we can still sell some of these players because they are in demand across Europe despite what we think about them. Square pegs in round holes is how our team is setup. We have counter attacking wingers who play in a possession based team. We have cultured strikers who are at best on the counter attack and we had a well drilled defensive unit that has got worse over the last four years. Some players have come to the end of their time with us, our manager will not play the team in front of him but only sets the team up one way and when it unravels he can't do anything different. The team is looking more disjointed as time goes on, and having possession doesn't mean we are winning games. Even Aguero has been poor since he came back from injury and hasn't been scoring the goals he was at the beginning of the season until today. Hart still struggles with some aspects of his game, especially passing the ball out. Toure is a class player but we have said for a year or two that defence isn't his strongest point.

I can't blame Soriano unless he is the only man responsible for Txiki's appointment. And I don't think Txiki has done a bad job on moving players on and stop the club being taken for a ride on selling players. Where Txiki is culpable is in overpaying for "average" players who don't necessarily fit into a system of play which can maintain success in the English league. The blame for this comes down to both Berigistan and Pellegrini for me. The system we play and the personnel we employ in each position is either in the wrong place or lacks some of the attributes required. Some just don't have the heart to play in the Premier league and go missing too easily, others lack the skill for the role they are given.

If we can ship out 3 or 4 and bring in at least two top quality players and two very good ones then we can come back stronger next season but

Defence isn't toure's strong point?

He is an overpaid lazy git who wants out, he couldn't give a toss about the club anymore, should have gotten rid in the summer, he played defensive mid for barca and won the chumps league in that position.

We played 5 in midfield today to compensate for his laziness, in the vain hope he would produce a spark of magic. He needs to be dropped, for the rags second goal he just couldn't be arsed tracking back, plain and simple. He can sod off and take his birthday cake with him.

The signings txili made this season have been appalling.

Sagna -free -Richards would probably have provided more competition for zab.
Fernando - just Garcia in disguise
Mangala - we needed a top centre half and blew the budget on an unproven talent, we have a couple of young highly rated centre halves, is he any better?
Bony - January panic buy who may come good next season

The on,y decent signing he has made is fernandinho, the rest have been average at best.

At one point I feared it will be 1-6.

Which would have been more horrible imo than what they got from us as that was down to the sending off of Evans mostly, but if today is 1-6 with no red card for us thats lot worse.

Once again I dont know what gameplan was practiced by Pelle for this game.

Before that he had two week to prepare for the Palace game. What the hell we do to prepare for games. And then look surprised by a bit pressing and some long balls.

Tomorrow the squad goes to training and will have a week to prepare for WHU game, but will they do that? Certailny corners, set pieces are not something we practice.

No doubt we will have pictures of the players "training" on the OS, full of smiles .

At this stage of that season we still had it in us to beat Chelsea at Wembley and make a cup final.

This season has been a fucking disgrace.

I agree this season is probably worse, do you think sacking the manager will solve the problems?

I'm not sure there is anyone available that is much better

4 wins in 13 with this set of players?

I reckon a non league manager could have achieved that.

Yep most probably, but last season was a different story, good football and two trophies, he hasn't changed, the players attitude has. Maybe we do need to change it again cos it obviously ain't working. But maybe getting rid of some of the 'star' players might have solve more if the issues?
