The Greatest player of your time

I can only comment on players that I've seen in person.

The Arsenal team of around 03/04 had a few candidates. Henry is always who I say is 'the best player I've ever seen' - but thats because I've never seen a player play so well against us. Bergkamp was just silly. Viera on his day was unbelievable as well.

But there's been plenty of players that I have either seen and were fantastic but didn't overly impress me when they played against us. Messi didn't do anything against us a few weeks ago, Ronaldo and Rooney have scored a few against us but they haven't done anything outrageous.

For City I will always say relative to his time, Benarbia was brilliant.

I was born in 1980, So Maradonna is the best player in my lifetime (or anybodys for that matter IMO)

But i was a bit young to really witness that particular genius at his best.

However i was all grown up when Zidane was weaving his magic. When people talk about "Their Generation" They usualy mean the time between around 13 to about 25ish. So yeah. I'll go with Zidane.

Messi however has the talent to be the best of them all. Time will tell.

I am 48 so it is Pele for me with Maradona close but not too close behind.

Zidane was World Class but no better than Platini, Bergkamp, Best, Cruyff, Gullit etc - so cant really see why he has been mentioned so much.

After 7 pages not a single Defender. Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbaur, anyone??? Frank Rijkard, Franco Baresi and Oscar Ruggieri and Fachetti well behind Bobby and the Kaiser.

For the older ( much older ) posters Bill Nicholson, Bill Shankley and our very own Joe Mercer all say that Sir Tom Finney was the greatest player they ever saw.

Who is the greatest player you have ever seen, whether it be live on the telly or at the actual game? This has to be of your lifetime.
Live.
1 Colin Bell. To witness him driving on over the half way line with the ball at his feet and in full flow was unforgettable. And a point not usually spoken of about Bell was he was a lethal finishing machine from beyond 25 yards, It was pure delight to witness the netting shaking from a Bell finish. The man had a sensational right peg and devastating shot.
2 Alan Shearer, for Blackburn. A nightmare every time he came to Maine Road. He invariably rubbed our noses in it. And I witnessed some spectacular goals from him there. One of the few players that you would hear a definite echoing sound from his striking off the ball, before it hit home, very weird.
3 Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool. Best “Thinking player” I ever saw. He was on his way before he made the pass to his team mate. If that makes sense .A major part of the game is all in the head.
I have seen plenty of continental players live over here ,non really caught my eye on the day as worlds best, though their reputation went before them.
On telly.
1 Pele. Brazil
2 Best N.I.
3 Charlton. England
4 Eusabio. Portugal
5 Cruyff Holland

Pele, no question. The size of Heskey with the skill of Robbie. He had it all. Never went round a defence, but straight through it. Power and class.

Zidane and Bergkamp had an aura about them that is different from the likes of Messi and Ronaldo. The only other player I can think of that plays the same way and with the same class is Kaka. Messi is without doubt unbelievable but Zidane and Bergkamp had a way of making it look thoughtless and neither looked like they were having to try that hard.

Ronaldinho a couple of years ago + Romario 94.
Come to think about it, isn´t it wierd how all the brasilian players peak in their early 20? Think about it: Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Adriano, they were/are all shite after 25...Well maybe not shit but atleast over the hill....

The best player I've seen in the flesh was Matt le Tissier. He was though, a little too inconsistent so .... Bergkamp wins it ....delivered magic nearly every game he played in.

Best player ever in my time? Fat ching head

1.Ronaldinho
2.Messi
3. Kaka
4. Zidane
5. Henry
6.Gerrard

Playing for City:

1. Wright-Phillips
2. Goater
3. Anelka
4. Weaver
5. Dunne
6. Kinkladze
7. Rosler
8. Dickov
9. David James
10. Benarabia

That is my opinion.

1) Zidane
2) Henry
3) Bergkamp

Zidane and Bergkamp had this aura about them, and were so graceful on the ball. Poetry in motion, seemed like slow motion at times if you get what I mean, never rushed.

I guy called Cha Bum-Kun he was South Korean and played in Germany before Germany had many none European players. I guess the nearest thing to him in English football today would be Frank Lampard, but he was more of a goal scorer than Lampard and more flair.

never heard of him, but just checked him out on YouTube. Nice one. he could play at bit. Of the time when hacking him down was quite acceptable. So they did.
Got him playing agaisnt Borussia at the mo

Of course he was a rag and therefore my opinion holds much weight for my obvious bias for everything blue, but as a true football fan, i have to hold my hand up and say....

George Best for me

I was lucky enough to have watched City in the late 60's and early 70's when the derby's were indeed very special, just for the players around at that time, putting it mildly Best was simply unplayable and a genius......

Due to some strings pulled by my best pal, Rodney Marsh (None other!) came to my recent birthday bash and the stories he told about Best were unbelievable and funny, real funny bonking Miss World before an important game at The Swamp was just one he told!
