Can you be a bit more specific about "recouped via other means".... you mean like more cuts on things like winter fuel allowances etc...? They are going to be Tory lite and allow the rich to get richer whilst cutting publice service and increasing the taxes that will affect the less well off much more severely... just take a look at the Welsh Government, cutting everything left right and centre dur to lack of money whilst at the same time increasing the members of Welsh Parliament by just under 50%... all to secure their own futures.

I agree, it's ridiculous the way Tory supporters and left wing socialists are on Labours back. I look at it this way, I've just got a new Job. The previous guy was inept below the level of incompetent for 14 years so what do I do? I can either ignore the problems and carry on and hope nobody notices or I can grow a pair and fix the problems no matter who I upset short term.

Basically so long as we, the electorate, vote in governments with massive majorities in parliament based on only around 20-25% of the total electorate actually going out and voting for them then we can expect to suffer from a sequence of elected dictatorships. That means that each government’s over riding priority will be to retain power. Hence we will be hit hard during the first year or two to build up a government war chest and then give-away budgets to make us think everything is hunky dory. There is really not much to choose between the Labour ad Conservative parties at the moment.

Sorry, it was meant to sound like an exam question. And hands up, £9bn is more than I'd thought (partly as I'd assumed half of the cost would come back to the treasury in tax and NI so the net cost is less). And the big part of that is just settling what pay review bodies had recommended that the previous government hadn't budgeted for.
