The Labour Government

In the pantheon of recent dodgy politicians with murky pasts Reeves is hardly up there with the 'best' of them. The amount of stuff written about her suggests attack agenda as much as any interest in public probity.

Interesting to see what this new deal with EU is. A bit leaked but so long as it’s a bit of give and take then you have to doff your cap to the government- they’ve got there in fairly short order.
Good to see you’re not jumping on the “surrender” bandwagon that the Tories, Reform and the RW media were already on even before the deal was announced and long before the details are understood.

Don't disagree about the nature of the slur but I'm not sure I'd be holding that degree up as a badge of honour. A PPE degree rattles along and covers just enough ground at just about enough depth to convince the often already highly ambitious students that they actually have a firm grasp of proceedings and therefore do in fact know best, when in reality they know enough to sound plausible but lack any substantive depth. If you wanted to build a way of creating an over confident political class you'd design this qualification. In a competition on which of late has fucked up our country more, Eton and the Oxford PPE are probably in a photofinish !
She has got a Masters in Economics though which is more pertinent.

My reasons for voting for Brexit was for TTIP. It was never about trade, standards, freedom of movement etc for me so anything that makes trade smoother is a positive for me and you’ve always got to give a little to get a little. What the government have achieved given the global backdrop has to be acknowledged as an impressive feat - gone from largely combative relations to a deal of sorts in less than a year but have also had to play regard to other trade deals being worked on.

We also have to accept that people voted for Brexit for a variety of reasons and again the government will have had to work hard to respect the democratic will of the people but not all will be happy for sure.

Well done Labour + Starmer.
stronger alignment with Europe is a must.

The first-ever EU-UK summit is taking place in London on Monday, as the government signed a post-Brexit deal with the bloc.

Details of this agreement will come shortly, but we expect it to include news of a deal for 12 years of fishing access and talks on youth mobility.

Von der Leyen said: "We’ve got a real chance to turn the page and write a new chapter in our relationship.

"Working together to deliver on the security of our shared continent and the prosperity of people on both sides of the Channel."

Gbeebies and the RW press will accusing Starmer of surrendering to Europe 80 years after VE day.

As a PPE graduate, your post neither reflects my neither my experience nor that of other PPE graduates I know. It's a challenging degree in relation to range of topics, skills required and sheer amount of work. I was doing more than double amount of work of most of my friends at the time who were studying economics, history, psychology, English and so on.

For reference, I chose to study PPE due to my interest in the subjects, the wide range of topics and the fact that it was long regarded as a challenging degree. I was from a council estate with no political ambitions. From those I know who studied PPE, just one had political ambition and she is currently an MP.

You are making the mistake of judging a lot pf people from a small sample.

The fishing thing is a bit disappointing. I'm under no illusion regarding restoring the domestic fishing industry - that ship has well and truly sailed, but it is a nail in the coffin of fish stocks and conservation. :-(

Nigel already primed and briefed by the Beeb.
Thought I’d have a look on there earlier on and what I found was pretty disgraceful. There was one segment from Chris Mason who basically said to forget about the good things, you’ll be steered away from the bad, and that’s where the issues are. And then some interview with a European MP (I think), and all they could question on was what the EU are giving, and when she didn’t answer, for obvious reason, it pushed even more.

The BBC is still full of Johnson and Tory stooges who no longer get the big stories ahead of the announcements, leaving them scrambling around for favour. The quicker that they get rid of the likes of Mason and become impartial again, the better.

Apparently, fishing was one of the hardest hit industries post-Brexit.

It's just a symbolic stick, because it's easy for people to visualise a 'foreigner' fishing for 'our fish, in our waters'.

I think we should open up our waters to the EU, but only for sustainable fishing, not those huge industrial seabed Hoover's and other methods that result in huge waste and destruction. There was a lot to be said for UK waters just being left alone to recover ecologically post Brexit.

I don't disagree with that. I suspect very few of the "betrayal" merchants, however, care much about conservation.

Probably after all that Roman/Viking gold from shipwrecks.

Anyone saying this is a betrayal of the Brexit vote is chatting complete and utter shite. Yes, 52% voted Leave but if there was another vote tomorrow Remain would win by a fucking landslide. In any case, we're not rejoining the EU - we're just moving towards having closer ties with them which makes perfect sense in today's world.

Farage can go and fuck himself - especially as even HE was suggesting at one point that we should join the EEA

This Labour government is pragmatic and realist. But the truth is the fishermen and the farmers have been dealt a horrible blow by this deal and the budget.

Saying that it’s vital we mend our relationship with the EU and form closer ties. There’s also a lot of good that will come out of this deal.

The truth is though we’ve ended up with a worse deal than we had by being in the EU… although every sane person knew this was the only realistic outcome.
