Starmer is making a U turn but not reversing it completely.

He will make some tweaks so more people other than pension credit people receive it.

We shall see what he comes up with. People won't forget the scrooge like tactics though.

Interesting that Reeves was saying that wasn't happening at 9 am and the policy was staying.

Obviously his detractors will pitch it as a U turn and his supporters will pitch it as an adjustment to the criteria which is what many of his supporters objected to the time even if they agreed with the policy in principle.

Either way it will probably be enough to make it a non-issue within a few weeks and certainly before the winter.

Fair enough, it's one i stayed out of - no delight in removing any policy like that even if it was to make economic sense.

This is what I said in December when someone said the WFP should be linked to Council Tax band.

I’m not defending the current system. I’ve already said it was implemented in a ham fisted manner. Linking it to CT band will lead to all sorts of anomalies. It needs to be linked to income with a line drawn in a different place than the current system. Makes much more sense than arbitrarily linking it to a measure that might be just a general indication of wealth and affordability rather than something that would be unarguable.

Good to see the government implementing what I suggested.

"We want to ensure that, as we go forward, more pensioners are eligible for winter fuel payments" Thats could me altering the level at which you qualify and/or increasing the volumes of pensioners who enrol for Pension Credit thus increasing numbers. Details will come in the Autumn Statement.
