The Labour Government

Can't wait until the Torygraph to get hold of our train drivers pay offer as i assume it will be the same for all other companies...
Will all be one company soon, I assume there will be steps to standardise pay?

Background talks already going on about the aspirations of GBR.

From what I've been told the treasury are the ones being the issue.

For example as a 'welcome' all GBR staff would be afforded free national rail travel (with conditions such as dates/services it cannot be used) the cost is 'nominal'.

It's going to take a while to sort.

ASLEF may not like it, but the logical thing would be to get back to the "link" system whereby the senior drivers get the best routes and pay. But whereas a steam driver could drive virtually any steam loco, changing routes means changing the type of traction. A sprinter to a HST may need training (and on new routes).

I know my union has started a campaign against increasing agency staff. Not sure if the others will follow.
Are agency staff much use? If working trains, do they know the rule book for safe working of trains? If Northern still has a staff shortage for ticket offices, would they not prefer to recruit direct staff as general purpose relief rather than resort to paying more to an agency?

Are there really any "unskilled" jobs left on the railway since porters disappeared?

My own experience they are just told to show up and do what they are told.

Most of them just sat in the messroom playing on their mobiles rather than what they were employed for.
