The Labour Government

Jesus - not even RAF planes - just one's leased to the RAF

It’s a 27 year PFI that started around 2008. The aircraft are modified to be used as AAR tankers and can also be used as military transport aircraft. To all intents and purposes they are RAF aircraft and the fact they were procured via a long term leasing arrangement is totally irrelevant. Half the aircraft in the sky are owned by leasing companies and banks. It doesn’t stop them being the aircraft of a particular airline.

If someone put a brick through your PCH or PCP leased car you wouldn’t say never mind it belongs to the finance company.

1% tax on homes bought that cost over a £1,000,000 would adequately cover the welfare benefits they want to cut.

Maybe do the same on profits over a certain amount as well?

Oh wait that means tax evaders and rich people would have to contribute more to sustain the country rather than rip off whichever government is in power with piss poor outsourced worked contracts.

I disagree - it depends which govt is in power - some govts are happy to turn a blind eye and don't consider they/we are being ripped off.

Bollox of course and I am with you - seems that some people reach a certain status in life - and that varies on income and position - but once you get there your "I must punch down " gene kicks in.

I see it at work.

A grade above me has been offered a pay rise which, if agreed will remove some safety responsibilities from my role and they will be transferred to them. Along with a blanket agreement to accept all technology which could make my role in it's current form redundant.

The old hands are pissing in the wind agitating for it to be rejected. All the 'kids' are seeing the pound signs without looking at the long term consequences.

In a natural cycle I should be retired in 13 years. Their decision may make me and thousands of others redundant. They also lose other benefits that were hard fought for decades, such as losing full sick pay in exchange for 9% over 3 years.

In my experience the old hands - assuming they have enough time in - should take the redundancy money/pension and be well away from the organisation when it crashes and burns

I don't fully understand. Are we talking about staff on trains not being required to know / implement rules for safe working of trains?

The end game could possibly be that. Driver operated only services or "customer service ambassadors" who's job is to sell tickets/provide catering provided by Ontrack. A staff railway agency created to provide casual staff.

RMT are currently monitoring their influence. They recently appeared at a depot to "assist in revenue protection and customer service". It lead to a ballot where management backed down for now...

BBC understatement ...

UK buying planes that can drop tactical nuclear weapons "could be controversial"....

Then saying they could only be used with US consent. Yeah, not just for deterrence then.

Just imagine, they'll be calling it terrorism to protest about it.

Absolutely right. What the ruling elite have always done, brilliantly I might add, is make sure everything is always geared up for them.
7% at private schools and 4% paying inheritance tax, but they’ve somehow managed to get Joe Public onside and complaining about how unfair everything is.
Admittedly it’s all a lot easier when the instruments of communication are mainly in the hands of those who want to keep everything, thus spinning almost every story in a way that is actually nothing more than propaganda.
It’s why the Tories are the most successful political party of all time, and why talk of their demise might be a tad premature…

Scaremongering nonsense. Does anyone seriously think Russia is capable of invading the UK? Not only is it stretched by the war it started in Ukraine, it’s lost hundreds of thousands of men and thousands of tanks, etc to the Ukrainians.

On top of that, they’d have to get through the not insignificant forces of Poland, France, Sweden, Finland, which even without US support would decimate the Russian conscripts already fucked from Ukraine.

Finally, slow troop carrying transport planes would be sitting ducks for the RAF and RN, as would landing craft. We could kill hundreds of the bastards in each.

The whole premise of war in the UK is utter bollocks, it’s not bloody Dad’s Army.

The entire tax debate in this country is fucked. Labour should be hammering 2 things every single time any of them is in front of a camera.

We pay the lowest taxes in Western Europe.

We’re paying lower taxes now than we have since the 1970s.

The entire premise that we’re being taxed to death is a bullshit right wing owned media driven fantasy.

We’re feeling poorer because the cost of living has gone up because energy companies have been allowed to use world events (Covid, Ukraine) to justify price hikes and pull in record breaking profits from the British public and driving up costs of everything from heating our homes to restaurants and food production.

But instead of dealing with that, lowering cost of living so we can afford the tax rises that will fund the government spending people want, they’ll just keep letting the conservatives and reform own the narrative around tax and rise taxes just enough to do nothing for anyone.
