The difference is that our billionaire owner doesn't put his money into the club. Even if he did, he'd be a relative pauper compared to Sheik Mansour.
We can't afford to pay players £200k a week. We have had to finance a new stadium. Who paid for yours? Our net spending on players over the past 8 years has been minimal. You get hit by the big money stick? Diddums. We don't have your cash and we get hit by the no trophies won stick. So what. Support your team and move on.
Before we tell, you, and we will, why don't you tell us who you think paid for our stadium?
I am specifically calling you out on this because many Arsenal fans think that City has been given a new stadium at taxpayer's expense which is simply not true.
So tell me, who do YOU think paid for our stadium?
Actually, my question was a sincere one. I genuinely don't know how your stadium was paid for. Pray tell.
.
Genuine question? My apologies, I had assumed you to be making a snide little dig founded on complete ignorance.
The answer is, the people of Manchester paid for it.
You will know that the stadium was the venue for the commonwealth games in 2002. An integral part of the bid that brought the games to Manchester was City's agreement to give up Maine Road and relocate to the City of Manchester Stadium after the games. Without that agreement, by the way, Manchester - nay Britain - would not have had its first world class velodrome (you may have noticed that Britain has done quite well in Cycling events since the Manchester velodrome was opened) and the people of Manchester have a 50 metre swimming pool into the bargain.
Stony has already made the point that City had to fund the conversion of the ground from its athletics use to a football use. That was no small undertaking. You may have wondered why there was a running track around a two tier stadium in 2002 and now there is no running track in our three tier stadium. The answer is because a huge quantity of soil was excavated so when you enter the stadium at ground level, you are at the top of the first tier of the stand. The pitch is probably thirty feet below you.
The deal thereafter was that City get the gate money for the first 33,000 (the old attendance at Maine Road) and the rest of the gate money is split 50-50 with the local council. There was a large element of Sport England funding in the initial construction costs of the ground, which IIRC was lottery funded rather than taxpayer funded, so the money which Manchester City Council used to build the ground is partly public in its origin, but was provided to the City Council to enable the Commonwealth games project to go ahead? Which it did and was a great success as you may remember.
That investment into that part of East Manchester has in fact proved to be the springboard for a great deal of regeneration in what was previously a rather derelict area. ultimately as I say the ground is owned and was paid for by the City of Manchester. MCFC is its tenant.
PS, don't mind the mods, they've all got hangovers today :)
