The Nigel De Jong Appreciation thread

3.5m, if true, is a fucking disgrace. What the fuck is going on? I'm sickened by that figure. Some player. One of the best at what he does. Will be missed.
When will he be missed?

so so gutted to see him leave ,what a seasoned pro he is, he never let us down and with Barry still injured letting him leave could be a huge mistake!

I would have thought we'd only sell him that cheap if they'd agree to sell us someone else in return but we're not being linked with any of their players anywhere unfortunately.

definitely a bad days work to allow him to leave and without knowing the fine detail, i feel we`ve been mugged.

best of luck nigel, you never let us down and i personally will remember you with great fondness, i thank you.

please dont come back to bite us on the arse
Why is it a bad days work if he is replaced with the more versatlie Garcia given he'd have left on a free next summer?

1) if as quoted we are getting rid for next to fuck all, that in itself is a bad days work. imo. 2) if garcia turns out to be no better or worse than de jong it will be a bad days work imo.
3) if garcia turns out to be better than de jong i may change my opinion on #2.

I haven't read all 22 pages of this thread, but those posts I have read are negative about the club letting NDJ go.

My thoughts: NDJ is by all accounts a great guy, and is obviously a great player. However, he has been peripheral in the MCFC team recently. Last season he played minimally. He was a sub that allowed Yaya to get forward or was cover for Yaya or Barry.

I was under the impression that things went slightly sour because a) he was not first choice and b) he made certain demands that the club wouldn't meet re salary. In addition for someone as professional as NDJ, I can't imagine he didn't want to play more regularly as well.

So I don't think we should castigate the club for this. I don't think you can relate Sinclair coming in to NDJ going. Sinclair is a bench warming replacement for Johnson. IMO Rodwell was brought in becuase it was expected that NDJ would go.

So sorry to say goodbye NDJ. Your have been great, but I assume this was in your best interests and that the club have not been daft.

Top man top player at what he does but unfortunately we only need him for 10% of our games

Rodwell may well be his replacement but that's like replacing your 42 inch plasma with a book it's just not the same

1) He's on high wages and is in the last year of his contract and Mancini wanted someone more likely to figure in the first team.

That covers 2 and 3 also.

Milan website has confirmed it. Just a matter of time until mcfc.co.uk follows suit.

I am genuinely upset that he has left. However, to be fair, it pained me to see him spend so much time on the bench. I do not like any player, who has a contribution to make, warming the bench. If he asked for more money, and the club were not prepared to give it, then he has a choice to make. Allowing his contract to slip into the final year was all the evidence that we needed.

Perhaps NDJ's exit reflects the transition that Mancini is making with the team. His first full season was about solidifying the defence/midfield - De Jong was the perfect anchor for this, as YaYa was settling in. Last season saw a miserly defence coupled with a ferocious attack. Nigel figured less as Mancini wanted more players that could probe as well as they defended. (hence, Maicon is a target). Barry is a better distributor of the ball and, when he is fit again, we will not miss NDJ as much.

And yet... what a warrior, what a fighter for the cause, what a Blue!

Nigel - my boy named his teddy bear after you. He plays under 11 football in your position and tackles like a beast. I always held you up as a model professional to which he should inspire to be like. Now I have to explain to him how football works and that you are no longer a blue (at least not on your shirt - deep down we all know you bleed blue).

Goodbye Nigel and thank you.

Cheers big Nige. Absolutely loved watching him a few years ago when we weren't as good as we are now and we needed someone like that in the side when more often than not our backs were against the wall....basically hoovering up and causing carnage in midfield... Good luck at Milan.

Says it all but a sad sad day

My question would be is ndj a city legend?

When will he be missed?
Every time we come up against players with pace in midfield like Ramires for Chelsea who Barry generally struggles against. Nigel always seems to cope better against faster players, even though he's not that quick himself.
Every time we come up against a team where we need to win a physical battle in midfield.
When we need to keep the ball in a tight game.
Certainly within the squad.
Plus now we can't sing his songs anymore.

No, he was a decent player but played in just a quarter of our league games when we won the league and wasn't needed to beat spuds and utd 11-2 away.

I'm sad to see him go as he seems likeable but I don't think he will be missed football wise if Mancini gets Garcia.

I dont question many decisions but letting De Jong go for as little as €3.5 million is fucking shocking business by the club. I am hearing De Jong is gett €120 grand a week not huge money. Why the fuck didnt they just give him the money and a new contract instead of spending 20 odd million on Javi Garcia and end up giving him the £120 grand a week deal. I am truely dumb founded by the club and Mancini by this move. 27 just going into his peak I just hope we have put on a load of add ons in this deal as were getting robbed.
Look at the midfield Barry after that injury he is on borrowed time at the club for me lucky to get a season out of him as the only defensive midfielder scares the fuck out of me if we dont sign a replacement. Rodwell is too young to do that job on his own just yet we need to make a signing to replace De Jong big time or we will struggle against the bigger teams when we need someone to crunch a player. I am just dumb founded by this move and Mancini has made a big fuck up by letting him go in my opinion.

All the best DJ. Good luck to you in all you do from here on.
Thanks for all the bone-crunching tackles and making the opposition think.

We'll be okay and I'm sure you'll be looking out for us

Good luck at Milan..............unless you end up playing us in the not too distant....
