If you sign up for a job where you knwo you will be working shifts why should you get a shift allowance?

Surely in this case they signed up because they got shift allowance, at the end of the day it is their wages, how it is made up my is irrelevant, I cannot see nurses getting a 25% pay reduction, won't happen

Because;

a) it makes it harder to live a "normal" life

b) it takes years off your life expectancy

so there needs to be an incentive to do it.

So, don't sign up for a job where you know beforehand that you'll be working shifts.

If it includes a shift allowance why not?

BM Agree with you about nights , I've worked them and are not recommended.

I accept that 24/7 is a generalisation , but it is heading that way , more Banks are opening on Saturdays now, I work in retail , major Supermarkets do 24hr opening and Sundays, i'd be interested to see a post off someone who worked for one , to see their night shift premium , Sundays are paid at normal rate .

Look on any jobs website and you'll see that shift allowances are becoming less common .

I can't help but notice that despite all the Save the NHS tub thumping during the Election , the only thing people are complaining about is nurses shift allowance , the Socialists should be ashamed of their scare mongering .
As I said above, I was overnights manager with Sainsbury's, and my starting wage was approx £3.5k more than any other manager. My staff were on quite a bit more than the day shift staff, otherwise they just wouldn't bother doing the job. I know Asda tried to get rid of overnight staff and put them on something called twilight shifts - a real fucking eye opener that was, and the union couldn't do a fucking thing. I think it was then that I realised how ineffectual the unions had become. It appears the only place they have any clout is in the public sector!

If this is true that it not only ruins your life but shortens it I am not sure a few quid makes this ok
if you are right don;t take the job in the first place

If it's on offer of course you'll take it & if you're receiving it then it's taken away then you've very right to be fucking furious! However, I don't see why shift allowance should be a given.

not sure that is a valid argument 3,5k divided by 52 weeks divided by 40 hours = £1.68 per hour and that is managers salary what did the shop floor workers get about 50p per hour extra

Hardly worth the health and social issues

That's why I left, it wasn't worth the hassle (some of the other managers weren't happy about the overnight guy getting £3.5k more than them though). However, the blokes took home a few hundred quid a month more than day shift guys, and for people being paid not much more than the minimum wage, that's quite healthy.
