Austerity this austerity that, how would you lefties gone on after the war?! Mind you if we'd had a Labour PM during WW2 we'd be all speaking German now.
Er the Allies won the war and the German people are not all speaking English - or French or Russian for that matter.
And on a point of order we had a PM governing a Govt of National Unity during the hostilities - so in actual fact the Govt was of all hues not just the one.

It's interesting reading Patrick Minford's view on dismantling the state. He (rightly) says that if you seriously want a smaller state, it has to be bottom up. That means a complete understanding of the function of government by examining everything the government does and understand if it adds value or is totally cost effective, rather than just top-slicing budgets and making do until the budget increases again.

It's a point lost on many, of course the rhetoric will always be a smaller state usually until the economy starts to go wrong and just as many a scoundrel turns to patriotism many a politician turns to the state get some money in the system, Majors Government went on a huge spending spree prior to the 92 election and Thatcher was not averse to it either, because it's quick and easy
