The Pro Road Cycling Thread

Just reading up on the history of the UAE team manager. Wasn’t aware of any of this. It was linked via the wiki page and then used the translate option. Some of the risks taken in the sport back then …

Great article. Just finished first half, reading rest later. Injecting yourself with spurious substances never ends well. Redolent of so many riders - no results then suddenly boom!

French journalists in this domain are superb - they cover it with so much fine detail.

I wasn't aware ITV wasn't showing Le Tour anymore. It's hugely disappointing it's no longer on free to air television and will undoubtedly have a significant negative impact on British cycling. I watched all the stages live this year, whilst working but didn't hang around for the chat afterwards so missed this.

Personally, the Tour de France has been a major part of my life. My Dad loved all sports, but cycling was his passion. I have extremely fond memories of him getting back from work and sticking the highlights on - Channel 4 initially and have watched myself on ITV over the years. The iconic voice of Phil Liggett and the wonderful coverage over the years.

Cycling simply doesn't get enough attention in this country as it is. It's a sport we've had so much success in. Boardman winning the opening TT and getting the yellow jersey was as good as it got once upon a time. But then we had Cavendish and Wiggins, Froome and Thomas. We had all the success in the Olympics on the road and in the velodrome. Then with Pidcock also on the MTB.

There was a token gesture update on La Vuelta. But not enough considering Pidcock's podium. Behind a paywall this is only going to make things worse. Unless you're into cycling you'll never find any news about it, despite it being such a hugely successful sport for this nation over the past 12-15 years.
That's quite sad.
I have little interest in cycling, but find the last 5 or 6 miles of each stage strangely compulsive viewing.

I find Imlach's slightly sardonic analysis and Boardman's insight, some of sports' best broadcasting. I've seen TNT's cycling output, and I find it VERY irritating. The presenter is paid by the word, and the rest of them are either dire,or too jokey.

A sad day that it's been lost free to air.

TDF 26 Route release today.
Alp D’Huez B2B stages 19 and 20 is one notable feature along with return of the TTT stage one in Barca

Would anyone be interested in a City cycle jersey?

Made by Primal Europe under license by City in 2020. I think the company went bust during Covid so very few were made.

Based on the 1994 away kit, black and red stripes with the City crest, XL size, it's a race fit for a 42 inch chest.

Worn once but too tight for me - couldn't be arsed sending it back, planned to lose some timber but never happened and it has sat in a drawer for 3 years. Overall excellent condition.

Just asking for a small donation to Pancreatic Cancer UK charity and cover postage or I can arrange for it to be handed over at a home game.

Drop me a DM if interested. Thanks.

Just been reading that Iniesta has set up a cycling team. He has signed Girmay, who got the green jersey in the Tour de France.

Been a great rider, hopefully not due to health issues and of his own freewill.
Wow. Agreed.
And I also have to add, pro cycling being the sport it is/was, I also hope it’s not enforced for any other reasons …

As well as his gritty determined riding I’ll always remember him for his no nonsense interviews and especially his infamous comment when asked about what his rival riders should be thinking about having him in the same race ;-)

Other reasons is your version of 'freewill'.

Think he was not going to be given leader status in any of the grand tours. a life as a elite domestic for Vin is probably not what he fancied.

Yeah they'll have been planning their strategy and you'd expect Yates to have wanted another crack at La Vuelta or Giro but has probably been told he's got to save himself for Vin, or that Vin is going to focus on those and they'll not bother challenging Pogacar in le Tour.

He would have retired months ago if it was for any other reason in my opinion.

Maybe bud, but another year of decent earning on a top team, you’d just go with the flow and bank the dough, surely.
It’s a helluva long time retired when you’re only 33!

But he’s already bagged the Giro and Vuelta, and he was never gonna be Tour main man, and could have led the team in some 1 week action. Still seems an odd one to me. To be 100% clear here, I’m not insinuating or accusing him of anything whatsoever. It’s just the timing with one year left doesn’t add up to me that’s all.

One year of intense cycling for the sake of someone else vs another crack at the Giro or Vuelta. It has to be strategy related in my opinion. Maybe Vin has decided he wants a crack at those and taking on Pog in le tour isn't worth his time. Last year you'd want to do something special, not give your all for someone else.
