I had it in my head that in 1982/83 we managed to combine both genuine title contention and relegation.
In 1982/3, we were top on 4 September after three games (the only side in the division to win its first three fixtures). On that day, we beat Watford 1-0 with a Dennis Tueart goal in a game notable for Bobby McDonald keeping goal for 87 minutes after Joe Corrigan broke a collar bone.
On 6 November, a 2-0 win at home to Southampton took us second after 13 games. That was the highest we ever reached in the rest of the season, and we didn't ever really look like title contenders except fleetingly.
We were in 8th spot after 24 games on 15 January after beating Norwich 4-1 at home, and were 5 points off 4th so while we weren't in title contention, we looked as though we maybe had a shot at a UEFA Cup spot.
We picked up 12 points from the last 18 games. We first dropped into the bottom three on 2 May, when we didn't play but Birmingham City drew a midweek game in hand to overtake us on goal difference. We then beat Brighton the following weekend to overtake Luton with one game left - against Luton.
And the rest is history. :(
