Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

You can also blame the owner for letting people run the club that didn't understand the world of football at the very top. Either it being the manager or any boardmember. Looking back I think people have learned a lot and learned it quickly. The set-up is so much more professional I still have to pinch myself, knowing it is only going in to the 7th season of the 10 targetted.

At the time I thought Hughes should have had more time. In hindsight I think bringing in Mancini was totally correct. He was able to bring the winning mentality that Hughes couldn't. Therefore I think Hughes will always be a good manager for any midtable club and he probably would have been perfect for us in the pre-Shinawatra/Sheik Mansour area.

Kompany and even more so Zabaleta have upped their game year after year. Hughes might have brought them in, Mancini and now Pellegrini keep developing the players to a level Hughes would never have managed. But it's simply the mentality of both these players that got them where they are now, with the influence of the manager limited.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

I'd draw a comparison with Moyes. Not inherently a bad manager but limited and well out of his depth at top level. Once we got rich, expectations outstripped anything he could deliver.

His least endearing trait was to routinely lambast refs every week as a smokescreen for the team's shortcomings. I could never take to someone who behaves like that.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

His greatest attribute was (is) a very good overseas scouting network he trusts, his weakness is a very poor domestic one which includes his own judgement.
Also very poor man manager

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

He was good for those still doing the pools, what was it, 9 draws on the bounce at one point

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

Sorry but never liked him probably due to his rag connections and his football was dogshit

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

For me I have absolutely no problem with Hughes as a man. Considering he was an ex rag I believe he put everything in to his job at city. As the OP correctly points out he brought kompany and zab in with a relatively modest budget as well as bringing SWP home. Unfortunately after the take over the expectations of the club went through the roof and Hughes wasn't the man to take us to the next level. He grossly overpaid on the RSC deal as well as lescott. The results weren't anywhere as consistent as we wanted and for that reason there was no option but to let him go.

As I said I have nothing against him as I think he did the best he could and I wish him well but the decision to bring Mancini in was the catalyst in taking us to the next level. Hughes did play his part though!
