Very good :-)
Downtown Abbey for the twenty first century.

Downton you silly man! Downtown is for places of entertainment
I'd like to blame autocorrect, but I'd be doing so in hope rather than any firm knowledge.

Funnily enough used to know a good boozer in a village called Downton in Wiltshire; near Salisbury. Saw Ted Heath in there once. Probably just back from one of his..errr...boating trips.

I always think of it when mum's watching that programme.

Autocorrect does convert it to Downtown but we have standards to maintain in order to keep the poor riffraff away

So Why should hard working people have to pay in excess of £1,000k per week to live there and those in Social Housing don't....?

So does that imply people on social housing don't work hard? Re phrase your questions...... Why should rich people not get everything they desire and why shouldn't the poor do exactly what they're fookin told! Rents are a 1000 quid plus a week cos tosser politicians of all sides are bent and have no desire to A stand up to the mega rich and B represent all members of society. The present government being the very worst of this attitude. Torys eh..... Just like Marmite..................fookin disgusting!!!

LOL nobody is telling those living in social housing what to do. I love it when socialists get wound up and paint an inaccurate picture of what's going on. The rich aren't a group, they are individuals with money. It's a childish analogy of baddies and goodies.

Like it or not council's budgets have been chopped and decisions need to be made to accommodate these changes to expenditure. Socialism doesn't generate income for t
he government without increased taxation. So to make sure taxes remain as they are and keep them down the government has decided to sell off the land to raise income. Fact, the area will probably prosper from millionaires moving in and spending their money (if they choose to actually live in the building).

Like it or not but London is our economic power house.

Just out of interest, if the tories are sooooo nasty then why is it the "poor" people living in social housing which you are on about were able in the 80s and 90s to buy their council house in London then sell it for an absolute bomb or as some are, able to rent it out and earn a fortune? Who allowed this to happen? Oh yes Maggie T who apparently hates poor people!

Oh God bless Mrs Thatcher. Allowing the Hoypoloi to own their own piece of crumbling, prefab heaven so they can feel better about themselves!

She knew exactly what she was doing, if she didn't then RTB would still be active now. She got rid of crumbling housing stock, got them repaired, got a lot of traditionally debt free people in hock to the banks, diminished and ultimately didn't replace the social housing stock and caused at least two housing bubbles, misdirected the economy, moved public money into private hands via housing benefit payments to thieving landlords, facilitated a rise in nasty right wing myths leading to the poor resenting the even poorer and ultimately she planted the seed for the social cleansing that has started in London and will eventually spread.

Not a fan, then?

Superb!

Sometimes one comes across fruity trolls with an undertone of cofee beans and sometimes a full bodied WUMs with hints of vanilla and dark cherry but that, sir , is a 1947 St Emillion of a post!

A few facts of life need putting in here to balance things up.

In the real world if YOU want to live in a "Nice" area you pay a premium, thats why similar houses in say Bramhall compared to Moston will have a different price.

Social housing is provided at a subsidy for those not in a position to buy a house, there is NO security as to where that house will be, it will never be YOURS, no matter how long you have lived there unless you buy it, there is no transfer of tenancy to the children, as many people have found out on the death of their parents.

The local council has a duty to manage on a budget, if the land on which houses stand becomes valuable enough to fund building more houses in a cheaper area then thats basic sense, because it provides more houses for people who can not afford to buy an that is its job.

Its not there to ensure aunt Mavis lives around the corner from her bingo hall, but that she has a f*cking roof over her head.

Great post.

Sometimes I do feel sorry for local councils. If they don't do anything they get slated, if they make decisions they get slated. On this particular scenario I believe it's what is best for the whole community, and to quote Spock: 'The needs of the few are outweighed by the needs of the many'.

But let's not let that get in the way of a good Tory bashing eh!
