I'm in the same boat as you regarding what could have been, but in the absence of a crystal ball our management had a choice to make and the choice they made was to hedge their bets by signing a letter of intent and waiting to see how they could play it out.
The same City fans that are criticising the club now would have been livid if the Superleague had taken off and we had been left on the outside.
Once the Hobson's choice was presented to them they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't depending on the eventual outcome.
As it turns out they probably should have gone the other way, but even then, who is to say what the outcome would have been if the 6th club had been someone else.
As it is, after a bit if buffeting and turbulence, we might find that we have come out of this rather well and we might even turn out to be the sole net beneficiaries from this whole sorry episode.[/
Totally agree with your sentiments..However Munich and PSG refused and have credit for doing so..the proposed members would have known this, and without them it was a worthless league..that is what perplexes me, as a superleague without two of the best teams was always meaningless.

eloquently put. Well said

Haven't the Glazers just put a £4bn price tag on Old Toilet?
Plus the debt, plus old toilet and the training facilities need bringing into the 21st century, so that's at least £5b in total

How many individuals in the world have that sort of money to lash out?
And if they have, wouldn't they prefer, as Sheikh Mansour did, to build something

In retail terms, the rags are Woolworth and we're Amazon

You are Sheik Mansour and I want my five pounds (or 3 billion).

We have a winner...however I'm currently having some issue with the bank.

If you can me send me $10,000.00 I'll be able to free up the funds and reward you with the $3billion. You'd need to book your own flight to Abu Dhabi, I'll meet you at the airport with a large novelty cheque.

Got it in one. I still don't get what all the fuss was about. In reality, what other choice did City have? We were the ones who stiffed the ESL, so all's well that ends well. :-)

It was all very melodramatic.

I know football is emotional but protests, slogans on bedsheets written in crayon, giving up season tickets. All because a few owners wanted to remove the illusion that there is competition and remove the hope that little teams can still win the big prizes...this is where football fans found their moral compass?

To quote Frank Zappa:
The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.

A super league isn't super without a pyramid for promotion or relegation, the fans at the ground and those sat at home watching on tv would be bored shitless with nothing on the line. A league where it doesn't matter if your team is shit and gets beat 3-0 every week, because you can't be relegated, what fun.

The clubs involved knew that a super league like the one you describe would have to be run by UEFA or it would have been blocked by UEFA, hence the closed shop because it was essentially a breakaway league. You can come up with formats that have qualification by merit and relegation/promotion (I had a bash a few pages back) but if it’s impossible to implement you’re wasting your time proposing it, at least that’s what the clubs were thinking. I believe this was a mistake. They should have suggested a format that the likes of Carragher and Neville would have found a lot more difficult to pull apart, and maybe they still will now that the super league idea has been made public. This kind of format would have more support, and if you were to throw in the current debt situation in football and promise a set percentage of the revenue generated will be given to the rest of the football pyramid, you could present this as the clubs listening to the fans and coming back with an improved format. There are always going to be people who will oppose change, the back pass rule, 3 points for a win, the Premier League, were all opposed by a significant number of people, but the opposition would be a lot less united and passionate. I think we’ll see something along these lines in the future.

These yanks will be back in some form or another.this may sound a bit crazy but Burnley being bought by yanks could have some bearing in the future, why else would anybody buy Burnley, they could be the sacrificial lamb once their precious 1 vote has been manipulated.
