I sometimes think that the fine lines between success and failure at the very highest level are underestimated.
While it is one of those once in a blue moon years, I don't think it's too far fetched to concieve the perfect storm in terms of the usual top teams all underperforming at the same time as a lower placed team (who can have their streaks) simply having a good injury-free season, and maintaining their good run thanks to the influence of a top manager and the mental reinforcement from both him and the continued belief they must have drawn from the evolving situation around them.
Added to the hard work ethic that you find with many lower table teams and a sprinkling of gems and you get the result that now have - primarily made up from many small incremental advantages which have all conspired to affect at the same time.
I might suggest this is why it's so difficult for one team to win the title every year - several are set up to consistently take advantage of their expected advantages, but even then, defending the title is a beast due to the difficulty of maximising so many little edges.
