The "which famous person died today" thread

Andy Kershaw, just 66. A familiar voice through our my formative years RIP
Only 66. Another one, who succumbed to cancer.

I remember Andy on Radio 1 and as one of the presenters of Live Aid. He was a very knowledgeable and likeable DJ.

R. I. P. Andy.

Shame about Andy Kershaw I enjoyed listening to his world music show. You could hear how passionate he was about the music he played. To this day if I ever hear any type if world music especially kenyan guitar bands, in my head I read the name of the band and the song with a Rochdale accent as to me thats how it should sound.

I knew Andy Kershaw around 1978-9, when he used to live in Whitworth and spent most of the time hanging around in Saddleworth with my mates, Then he moved to Leeds Uni, I can remember going to a couple of parties at his flat, he was always a good laugh. He has had his ups and downs, his book "No off switch" is a great read.

RIP.

I used to love the way he said The Bundu Boys !

Another good one and doubling down by wearing a Marc Riley & The Creepers t-shirt

I've loved The Fall since early 80s but never heard Riley & the Creepers, not for any particular reason I know of.

I used to listen to Kershaw's world music prog on R1 in the early 90s and still have some tapes of Pepe Kalle and suchlikes.

When AK was ents manager at Leed Uni early 80s, he refused to book the Sisters of Mercy to support Motorhead because they didn't have a real drummer or something like that. A goth hate crime these days IMO.

Down to earth lad in real life. His mum Eileen lived four doors down from us at Tonnacliffe. Same age as me putting things somewhat into perspective. Live each day as if its your last.
