This Stoke defeat?

Obviously, nobody saw it coming, we are masters of the universe at home.

Can't help feeling it's the frustration of defeat which has since got plenty looking at everything in a negative light, following the sale of Negredo and United signing Falcao?

I'm still pissed about the performance and result on Saturday, especially with Chelsea winning at Everton, and games to come against direct title rivals.

The international break hasn't afforded us an instant pick-me-up.

In a wider sense, though, have we set the bar so high that anything negative is now seen as crisis or failure? Feast or famine?

If we had lost to Liverpool at home, instead of Stoke, would the perspective of some be any different?
The only games we've lost at home to a non-top6 side in the Prem since the Sheikh came to us was Norwich under Kidd in that last game of the season that meant nothing, and against Fulham in 2009.

This sort of result is unacceptable! I know it can happen, i know teams can have an off day, i know "anything can happen in the Premier League"...but the sooner we have it ingrained into every part of our club that this is unacceptable and the higher we set our bar (which we should), it won't happen again.

I think we're too nice about things like this. I bet Barcelona Madrid Bayern all would look upon this as unacceptable, and we're trying to get to their level.

But i'm just looking forward now, there's nowt anyone can do about that result now.

Or Icclecityitus as I like to call it?

Maybe we will never rid ourselves of the sense that it is all going to end and go back to whence we came?

cityitis is definitely there especially among those who can remember the bad times

a perpective on where we are

me and my lads(who have only known the good times) for a bit of fun do predictions prior to each games

more often than not they predict 3 and 4 goals per game where as i'm always cautious 1-0 2-1 etc or in tight games, away draws and sometimes a defeat

in the last few season who do you think has been right more often, not me i can tell you.

they are seeing it for what it is where as i can't but not be cautious harking back to the dark days

the squad talent we have and i hope to continue to have, we will win most and score big in a lot of games.

as our chairman said we take a pinch, that's all it was.

I took my little boy on Saturday for his upcoming 7th birthday. He has never seen City lose in a live game, in fact all the games he has been to, we have won by three goals or more.

I stayed at home to watch the Wigan Cup Final with him. He was in tears and it choked me up.

He looked pretty confused on Saturday but expects us to bounce back by beating Arsenal 4-0!

He's a lucky little bugger!

Hope he is a good marker on the soothsaying business as well Tolmie.

I put Stoke down to early season fatigue , we know now that Kompany and MDM are not in good shape hopefully only minor injuries , their passing game was off although Stoke didn't punish us as a result.

We set ourselves up for failure on the break by not having either Kompany or MDM positioned where one of them should have been given that Dzeko wasn't on the field for header etc , simple stuff and both were too crocked to chase back.

In short 9 times out of ten we were 7 points after three games which actually sounds better given the 0-0 v Stoke early on last year when we should have lost in all seriousness.

I liked your assessent of the game in that we set up incorrectly personnel wise from the outset but maybe Dzeko as big as a work horse he is by being a tad lazy on tracking back for as often as he should was slightly still feeling the effects of the shocking challenge on his thigh from Monday.

No excuses for the loss we deserved it and were poor in our half with movement , passing and guile etc.

I am always gutted when we lose but we have set a high marker at home in the past three seasons and we were bound to drop a game at home against a side like Stoke at some stage its just that it came so early it surprised a few but lets face it we were rusty against Liverpool as well.

The next two games are big and we have to show the rest of the premiership that we rebound well from defeats like all title holders and sides wanted to go back to back always do.

Kompany hopefully will be ok after missing games for Belgium and I still haven't heard how Fernando's groin is either.

I may be wrong but I feel Chelsea's 100% start has added fuel to this debate as I get the impression that people are overly worried because we dropped points first.

If the Chavs go on to win every game, we doff our hats and say well done, but history suggests they wont.

No need to panic blues, onewards and upwards

Perhaps a subconscious sense of foreboding that complacency will be our greatest rival this season? I dunno, just throwing it out there.

I still tick off the big 40 tolmie , call it an old habit dying hard but the first thing I say to the misses is she has her worser half back.

Funny thing is she likes it better when I am not around whinging about whats to come next.

We are here to stay as are the big boys until a new big boy comes on the scene.

We will have our poor games and poor results like last Saturday.

Its how little you fall below what is required that makes the difference and how often that determines whether you win the end game.

We were 6-1-4 after eleven last season and I would take that again right now.

More than the loss,it was the way in which we lost which upset me the most,no fighting spirit,no urgency,no winning mentality shown by any of the city players.Yaya was the only one who atleast attempted to do something. The rest were just standing there fannying around with the ball as it was some training session.Had we won this game,it would have been easier going into the ars and chelsea games, now it all looks like an uphill task. Also i don't think players must take their starting spot for granted, guys like milner, navas must be given chances if the likes of nasri and jovetic are not doing well.Hopefully the issues will be addressed and we will back to our best in the coming weeks.

There was certainly an element of this. Stoke scored in the 58th minute so there were still 32 minutes remaining at that point. I expected the kitchen sink to be thrown at them but it was more like the Tap from the sink. I looked at the clock at 80 minutes and could tell then that it was game over. We just didn't seem to have a clue at how to change things to break them down.

Nasri in all three games has reverted to his average performance self which is a bit of a concern given the fact he had a full pre season and Kolorov was back to his worst. Hopefully it is just coincidence that both have been rewarded with new contracts.

It was a poor performance and we need to bounce straight back and with Arsenal and Chelsea to come, it wont be easy although I have not rated one Arsenal performance so far so would be as disappointed if we didn't get something there.

I agree that players should not take places for granted and I expect Nasri, Kolorov and Sagna to drop out against Arsenal with Milner, Clichy and Zabaleta coming in. Possibly even Navas too if we go one up top at the expense of Jovetic.

Yep. It's likkle city syndrome, alive and well. The football version of Little Big Man Syndrome.

The spectre of Man United hangs large in a lot of people's souls. Them having a big window, and presumably combined with their teenage fans prematurely gloating, has triggered a lot of the good old fashioned Reds-Under-The-Bed paranoia.

Phil Neville was right. We are stilla very "emotional" club.

......... the frustration of defeat

It is this which has struck home most. I never go to The Etihad with the expectation of beating X or Y. Nowadays I go with the idea that we 'should' beat X and Y, but we compete in a league where anyone, one their day, can beat anyone else. Lesley said after the game that he came with a game plan and they worked it to perfection. They must be as delighted as we are frustrated. I watched the video of players volleying in shots during last week and thought we have the firepower and patience to get the three points, but the ball is round!

I don't think it has hit hard enough.
I only hope the dismissive way the Stoke defeat has been explained by the experts is true.
I rest assured that everything will look so much better after the next 3 games then.

Edited for accuracy

To be honest most of my mates were pretty magnanimous in defeat and dwelled upon it about as long as it took to get to the pub after the game

Stoke are a better side than you give them credit for and did a job on us...it happens

I think sometimes fans lose sight of supporting city

That 'never win and home and never win away' song is sung for a reason

Of course it's nice to win games...'what do points make? Prizes'

But i'm not going to whinge like a woman should we lose the odd one either

We are nowhere near invincible and even the best lose (Real Madrid last weekend)

Whatever happened to our renowned good humour and humility?

there you go, Tolm, case in point.

I think you'll find it's only a certain type of poster over-reacting, though.
