This team won't be considered great until...

Very true. There was talk of us being the best British team of all time a week ago, now nobody believes that. We let ourselves down big time this past week but hopefully we can stuff Liverpool on Tuesday and regain some confidence and momentum. Can’t be feeling sorry for ourselves the lads need to step up.
I think there was more talk of us playing the best football ever seen in the league rather than us being the best British team of all time.

I don`t really care about what other people will say about us. I`m proud of this team and enjoy watching it, that`s what matters to me

Until they believe in themselves. Heads went down too many times in those last 3 games and it's sad to see because we are much better than that. Really good team, lot of work to do until we are a great team.

Not by playing for our life in CL with the need of winning games with ice hockey results like 6-2, 5-1, 4-1, 5-3 etc. This madness has to stop and pragmatism is needed our defence not able to cope with any pressure in CL later stages.

....if we win the league this season and successfully defend it in the 2018/2019 campaign.

Beat the top 4/6 teams home and away every season and in every competition year in year out...not only will this increase our fan base from the ground up but will also create historical superiority that trophies can rest on.

You get the impression that this particular City team won’t be considered great until we’ve either won the Champions League, or back-to-back Premier League tiles.

However, the “Invincibles” did neither, and instead are remembered for one specific achievement,

It’s been almost 20 years since an English club won the Champions League without a penalty shootout, so essentially it’s the overall domestic dominance that creates the legacy of greatness.

In that respect the record for most points, (Chelsea under Mourinho) has more credence than their record for most goals (under Ancelotti), so it would certainly help our cause if City could reach 96 and beyond.

Similarly, the United team of 93-94 is lauded for their fierce competitiveness, whereas the Liverpool of 78-79 and 87-88 were equally dominant, albeit the latter displaying more flamboyance than the former.

The United Treble team were arguably luckier than some of their other campaigns (as were their 67-68 team) whereas virtually every European Final involving Bayern Munich and an English team (Leeds, Villa, United, Chelsea) was won by the wrong team.

It’s also noticeable that having previously been cheated against Barcelona, Chelsea eventually rode their luck to beat both Barca and Bayern in 2012

We might never win the Champions League, but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor when judging greatness.
So we are never likely to scare Europe to death then?

This is impossible.

I do think we are playing the Rag and media game here and allowing "greatness" to be defined by the longevity of success.
The " invincibles " were invincible for 1 season and are remembered for a exciting style of play and specifically that season. Yes they went on to win more trophies but the greatness tag would not have been applied if not for that 1 season. ( and I would happily apply that tag having watched them take us apart at Maine rd. )
There was not ( correct me if I`m wrong ) too many back to back title winning teams say pre 1960 but is it truly correct to dismiss say title winning teams of any year which totally dominated any one season.?
Lets remember its the team the players in any one time, dont fall the Rag logic .
That Arsenal Invincibles team barely won any trophies.

They won the league in 2002 and 2004 then the FA Cup in 2005 and got to the CL final in 2006 and that was it. All that brilliant football with those brilliant players for three trophies. But they are remembered as one of the greatest teams ever.

This may have been touched upon, but I don't think it has?

Forrest have won the European Cup twice. They aren't considered great.
Chelsea have won numerous domestic cup, and a European Cup, and they aren't considered great.
Even if we do win the CL, we won't be considered great.
Just like the PL, United, Liverpool and Arsenal will 'always' be considered the biggest clubs, regardless of what we or Chelsea, Spurs, etc, do.
The 'great' clubs in Europe, regardless of their poor recent success, will always be Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Ajax, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Liverpool and United.
There is a mindset amongst their fans, and across European football, that these clubs are the great clubs of European Football.
And until another club achieves anything like what they have achieved, that club will never be allowed into that elite group, if ever.
It's more or less an invitation only 'great party', with UEFA running the doors.
