Tippy Tappy

if the Spanish obsession with possession at All costs becomes the norm then it will save City having to expand the stadium. Utterly boring.
Devoid of excitement. It will be like Italy in the 60s, neither side daring to take a chance, a forward pass or taking on defenders and the manager goes berserk.

There is always Stoke if you want that kinda excitement

Tippy-tappy football is all very well if everyone around you plays the same way. However, in a high tempo league and one where there are a fair amount of 'cloggers' then it doesn't work so well.

Bayern and Dortmund play a higher tempo, high pressing game, with lots of tracking back and attacking from deep. That's the successful brand of football now.

You have to do things at a higher tempo than what we have been doing to trouble teams who play it tight. Next season we'll see that. Pellegrini seems to know where we have been going wrong and is determined to give us the options to change that.

Completely disagree. Are you suggesting Barca wouldn't be quite so good "On a wet Wednesday night in Stoke"? I think Barca would beat them about 6-0 every time. The closest example is the way they absolutely destroyed The Shite in 2 European Cup finals. (The Shite are basically "Cloggers" on steroids.)

Barca and Spain play a "high tempo pressing game", but they also play possession football. Spain have won the last 2 major tournaments and are on course for the longest ever run at the top of the FIFA world rankings. Barca have won 3 Champions Leagues in the last 6 seasons, and are widely considered to be the best club side of all time. But because they lost the semi to Munich (incidently while Messi was injured) they are suddenly no good anymore and don't play the "successful brand of football now"??

Nonsense. They recorded the joint highest ever points total in La Liga last season with 100 points! Don't judge them on one semi final.

I'm not sure if you watched the games, but Munich played on the counter attack in both games. They did it absolutely brilliantly, but if you are suggesting it's a viable option for City to play on the counter attack for the majority of the season then I assume you don't go to the home games? 9 out of 10 teams come and park the bus, sitting back trying to keep the score down. It's impossible to play counter attacking football against teams who sit so deep.

Yes we have to play at a higher tempo, and possibly a higher line and more pressing when we don't have the ball, but possession is still key. The other poster suggesting the stadium will be empty if City start playing like Spain / Barca, I assume you are on heavy illegal drugs?! They're the 2 most entertaining football teams I've ever seen, 60,000 seats won't be enough!

Barca would run rings round Stoke & humilliate them 6-0 if they could put the ball in the net as they should. If however they were a bit unlucky or finished badly, Stoke would beat them 3-0 by scoring from corners etc.

That's the Premier League.

Can't argue with that, but I don't think playing more direct / on the counter attack would give Barca a better chance of winning, quite the opposite. Whatever style that you play, if you don't take your chances there is always the threat you can lose in the PL, particularly away from home.

For me, the higher the standard gets, the more important possession of the football is. Look at the winners of the World Cup and Champions League over the last 20 years, nearly all play possession football. Look at your lower leagues / even Sunday League, teams who knock it long to the big lad / in to the space for the greyhounds to run on to often win things. I know which route I'd prefer City to go down.

For me one touch decisive passing to feet quickly will unlock most defences, tippy tappy football is where the pass to feet is no more than a yard or so backwards and forward to the same players not going anywhere.

Spot on.

And when you find yourself yelling SHOOT FOR FUCKS SAKE after 5 minutes arsing about in and around the penalty area, that was tippy tappy football.

It's all about having a variety to your attack, I said a few months ago there's 4 ways to score in football:

1. Through the middle (e.g. Barcelona style)
2. Down the wings (e.g. Scum style)
3. Counter attacks/Ball over the top (e.g. Dortmund style)
4. Set pieces (e.g. Stoke)

Since Mancini took over we've been great at 1 & 4 but if you only have two main attacking threats then it becomes very predictable and easy to defend against. Hopefully the signings of Fernandinho & Navas will give us the pace and width to use the other styles (2 & 3) when necessary.

Last season we struggled against teams who parked the bus because we had absolutely no width so it took a moment of individual brilliance to get that first goal or a set piece, obviously we played through teams because of how good we are at times but in general we looked lethargic and lacking a Plan B.

We also struggled against teams who pressed us high because we didn't have any pace to be able to play a ball over the top because Silva, Nasri, Tevez and Aguero all prefer coming short for the ball to feet rather than running onto a through ball. Now with Navas and hopefully Pellegrini playing to Dzeko's strengths we will have that option as well. Dzeko gets slaughtered on here because he can't play the "tippy tappy" style as some would call it but look at the opening goal in Madrid, the sixth at The Swamp and virtually all his goals for Wolfsburg - they're all from crosses or balls over the top/in behind for him to run onto.

without any agenda whatsoever, i found watching Barca and Spain, the two top teams in their sphere of football, tedious. Very difficult to explain why, i just did. I cannot explain why i do not like cabbage, or cocoanut, or drunks it is how it is. I cannot abide rap 'music,' soaps and plenty of other things, some may have an easy explanation others not.
The level of ball-control, the intricacy of the one-touch movement, are amazing, i feel i should be applauding the skill, but after watching the same thing game in game out, it palls. Nothing like the feeling i had watching long-ball under Peter Reid or the agony of the Pearce era, just a feeling of "what's the point'. May be it's too pure, too complex for me to appreciate, like a german opera, or a fine wine.
May be, under Pellegrini City can be the next big thing, like Barca only quicker and more direct, that certainly would not be boring
