Today's shooting in America thread

No I mean you don't have a single concern for how unjust laws affect people in countries around the world.

Anti-lgbt laws are alright?

This thread isn't just gloating is it?

I think it took that direction because of the frequency that mass shootings happen and the collective shoulder shrugging that happens in response.

No meaningful action to stop kindergartens being shot up like the O. K. Corral.
It's almost like some on here revel in mass shootings and can't wait for the next one to post about.

Gun shops will be busy today
It’s Christmas! They’re always busy this time of year!

This 15 yr old’s father only bought the gun 4 days ago…do the maths!

Black Friday Special???

This shooting isn’t going to change anything. It’s not even going to count as a “mass murder,” because that threshold is 4 deaths.

Hate to spoil your fun, but no-one cares what Brits have to say about the US Constitutional Right to Bear Arms, or the deaths that come from it. NO-ONE!

It’s great that you have this outlet to vent your outrage, but don’t get bent out of shape if no-one gives a damn about your screaming into the abyss.

It's something you've grown up with though.

In my lifetime I can remember 2 mass shootings that changed the gun laws in the UK: Hungerford (1987) and Dunblane (1996); 17 and 18 deaths respectively.

After Hungerford semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns were banned, and after Dunblane all privately owned handguns were banned.

Since Dunblain I can only remember 3 events considered mass shootings (excluding NI). I understand the USA is vastly different to the UK, but please forgive us that us Brit's just don't understand your BONKERS gun laws.

It's not something they've grown up with, that's the thing.

Most of this stuff is post-virginia techand a result of the Republicans ending the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

The active shooter drills from Kindergarten up, the Kevlar plates in school backpacks, armed police patrolling schools, teachers being taught special codewords to alert them to a shooter over the intercom or every door having special deadbolts....that's all come in the last 10-15 years.

I meant guns and gun culture, not mass shootings.

Again that's not true either, gun culture in America today is something from the last 30 years.

Over that period the % of people who own guns has almost halved, and the number of guns per person has doubled.

It's gone from loads of people having an old service weapon or hunting rifle in the garage to a minority of gun nuts having huge caches of weapons.

The proliferation of open carry laws is in the last 10 years.

Scalia changed the interpretation of the 2nd amendment in 2008.

Up til the 1980's, the NRA was like the firearm equivalent of the caravan club. They were buy scouts who encouraged education, and then they got radicalised and turned into a lobby for absolutely unrestricted access to guns.

Never forget 70% of Americans want tighter gun controls. The majority don't want it to be like this.

Exactly this - BONKERS!!!

We in the UK tightened up our gun laws, and in the USA they pretty much did the opposite because of lobbying predominantly for financial gain.

Well, you seem to care. In fact you seem very emotional and 'bent out of shape' about it. Guilt by association raising it's awkward little head?

I grew up in Manchester!

I agree that the Second Amendment has been corrupted, but the RIGHT is foundational and thus has been on the books for a long, long time, while the subsequent LAWS have not been able to curtail it nearly as well as many would like.

Guns are simply a fact of life here and the Internet outrage on Bluemoon will do nothing to change it, like it or not.

Cheers.

What guilt would that be? And association with what or whom?

Care? Of course I care for the families who lost kids! Don’t be ridiculous! I also care about the thousands who die of starvation every day, or get infected by diseases that will kill them, or are abused by supposed loved ones.

I can list my outrages, if you’d like???

That said, none of the spouting here does a thing, and when I’ve tried (in the past) to have a more nuanced and educated discussion people quickly retreat to their corners and claim their outrage.

Go ahead, knock yourself out!

Then, tell me what changed!

If Sandy Hook didn’t change anything, tell me what will.

The frigging President got shot outside a DC Hilton and it didn’t change, so good luck!!!

I don't expect my disdain for American culture to change anything but I feel better writing it on BM. Seeing as this is the only Internet site I put some of my thoughts across then it'll have to do. :-)

The only restrictions imposed on shotgun certificate owners after Hungerford were -
Any semi -automatic or pump action shotgun had to be modified so that the magazine could only hold two cartridges, and with a cartridge in the chamber total capacity of the gun was restricted to three cartridges.
(I know about this because I had to pay to have my semi - auto magazine restricted).
And all shotguns had to be securely stored in an approved gun cabinet that was secured to a wall etc.
Again I know about this as I bought a 4 gun steel cabinet from Stensbys on Shudehill @ 1990.

That’s fine, and you’ll find plenty of confirmation bias for your position here.

It’s just funny how people see “Chicago” in my username and not only think they know me, but know more about the issue than me. Funny juxtaposition!

I have 3 firearms, one a holdover from a previous “job” that I use at the range. The other 2 are home & concealed carry weapons.

Illinois, where I live, has some of the most conservative gun laws in the country and only “opened up” their laws when forced by a recent Second Amendment lawsuit. We have no Castle Doctrine or Stand Your Ground laws, only personal survival. So, if someone broke into my house to nick the TV, I have no right to shoot them over the burglary. I only have the right to defend myself and my family from fear of death or serious injury.

Therefore, my family knows that if we are ever broken into, we FIRST dial 911, NO-ONE goes downstairs, and we all assemble in my son’s bedroom. From there, we assess the situation.

If anyone comes upstairs and attempts to enter the bedroom, they die. If they stay downstairs and nick whatever they think they can sell, then hopefully the Police will get them! If not, we have insurance.

I live about 1 mile from the Police Station and I’m sure they’re always looking to have some fun with burglars!

None of that, IMHO, sounds unreasonable to me. But, in a country where gun crime is prevalent, and even “non-gun crime” often involves someone carrying, then I feel that, given my training and regular practice, it is a prudent course of action.

There are millions of lawful gun owners just like me, who will never shoot their weapon in anger. As always, it’s the stupid and criminal that cause all the problems.

I've seen enough shit from the cops in the US, but this... this made me pause, big time...

Understand this; cop, man, wheelchair, knife, 9 bullets, graphic.

Ridiculous use of deadly force. Police Chief already took care of his job. What comes next may make losing his job the least of his problems.
