Toni Kroos

Real cannot fit Kroos, Modric, Isco, James into the same team behind Bale Ronaldo and Benzema. Trying to fit them all in is basically the root of all their problems.

They need a proper defensive midfielder like Casemiro too or they are completely hapless in defence - That's what cost Benitez his job, he bottled it and dropped Casemiro for the star names in the clasico and got spanked.

So Casemiro has to play, Modric has to play because he's by far their best central midfield option, probably their best player this season after the Keeper, and that leaves 1 spot for Kroos, Isco or James.

Recently the fans have been getting a bit pissed off with him, in their system he's seen as a luxury player, he's not as good as an attacking force as the real number 10's and he can't defend like Modric or Casemiro, so he's just an imbetween guy.

He's not a luxury player for Pep though because of how smart he is on the ball. No one played more games than Kroos in Pep's first season at Bayern, and he raves and raves about him in Pep Confidential.

His Ideal formation in that first year seemed to be Lahm as pivot, with Kroos and Thiago ahead.

Good post but one crucial mistake, Benitez was told to start the big names in the Clasico and when they got trumped he let the blowback reach the upper floors. He was absolutely correct for letting it happen but he was a political pawn for Perez.

Thry should never have sacked Carlo, especially to replace with inferior. They have gone from Carlo to Rafa to Zidane. Basically gone from elite to very good to unroven. Terrible management from Perez.

A comprehensive reply....thank you.

Well going by that thinking, the purchase of Kroos to join Gundogan will negate Pogba, no?

Kroos maybe was one of Pep's main men in his first season at Bayern but times change.

Kroos moved to Real.

Would Pep want to buy him for City. I'm not so sure. Good in possession but not sure if he does enough when his side are not in possession.

Kroos - 25 appearances, 41 tackles, 35 interceptions, 12 clearances, 1 block

Modric - 26 appearances, 30 tackles, 50 interceptions, 7 clearances, 3 blocks

The amount they both offer defensively is basically identical

A perfect illustration of how stats don't show anything. You only need to watch some real Madrid games to see Kroos isn't a defensive presence.

Agree. Unless we kept Fernando there's no play you could play Gundogan and Kroos in the same midfield.

I agree. They would play the same role in a Pep system. It'd be like playing Pogba and Yaya in the same setup. We need to keep in mind with these eventual signings that players need to be brought in to create balance in the system. We can't just go after any great players just because they're great.

Disagree, if Pep can play Thiago and Kroos together then he can play Kroos and Gundogan together with a pivot if he wants to.

Any ideas on most up to date football wise & published book on Pep & his thinking?

Pep Confidential is the most up to date book - but he changed a lot in the time he has been working with Bayern. Not the main idea - that he wants to have the ball - but whereas he might have tried to form Bayern into a Baycelona in his first season he has accepted that he has/had different players with different strengths in both clubs (and makes use of this strengths) and that the environments in both leagues and the opponents are very different.

The time in Munich for him probably was a bigger learning time than his first years in Barcelona.

That is why I am not sure if he is interested into Kroos - he would have matched very well into Barcelona ideas - but I do not know how he could give anything special to today's Bayern team.

The problem is the third partner with them.

I think he actually has an autobiography. Read recently in Four Four Two magazine that its pretty much out of print now. He goes over a lot more of his personal philosophies and beliefs in it, which probably links into the way his teams play. Could be worth a read if anyone could track a copy down.

Thanks to Maldeika & Jwoody19 for informative replies.

I think I read somewhere that the autobiography is very, very expensive, if you can find a copy.

Four Four Two. I'll take a look at that given it will be more up to date than my current reading of Pep Confidential which is a fascinating read.

How anyone can compare Modric to Kroos is beyond me. Modric when fit is like the best cm in the world.
