Tony Blair

The Iraq war like so much of the twentieth century was the west screwing up oil producing countries. Sadaam, the Shah of Iran, Gaddafi, and now the Assad regime , have all been allies while it suited us only to be dumped when they started not playing ball on the price of oil. Morals have been distinctly thin on the ground.

After all the Saudis are currently thinking of having a criminal surgically paralysed and these guys have been our bestest mates longer than any other country in the area bar Israel.

Blair is just one in a long line of British PMs and American Presidents who have invaded other sovereign nations under the pretext of bringing democracy etc when its just all about economics.

But it was the way Blair defended his actions that perhaps set him apart from the other warmongers. A truly horrible individual when it came to foreign policy. Thatcher was equally horrible at home.

Maybe so, GDM, but that doesn't mean he was wrong in law. I dont question that the legality of the war can be debated or that it is reasonable to regard the war as immoral. My point is that the highly dubious contention that the war was illegal seems to have been repeated so many times that it is now accepted as received wisdom.

I have heard lots of people describe the Iraq war as illegal, and nobody has ever provided a satisfactory explanation of why it was illegal (as opposed to perhaps immoral which is a matter of opinion, not a matter of law). It seems to be one of those Goebbels-type suggestions, where if you repeat it enough times people will eventually accept it as being true.

That's a very good point too

-- Wed Apr 10, 2013 7:41 pm --

Thatcher sent the SAS to train the Khmer Rouge in how to lay landmines.

Was that 'legal'?

Fair comment. Human beings are very adept at morphing opinion into cold, hard facts if it suits their agenda.

I hear the tabloid press are particularly good at it :-)

Yes. People will rejoice, and the twat has just realised this which is why he was bollocking on about how great Maggie was today and how naughty folk are for saying bad things and having parties. Trying desperately to reframe history in the hope that someone will do the same for him one day - maybe John Chilcot?

For all his potential wrongdoings over Iraq or any other policy which came to light, the fact is Blair was a brilliant politician. Dragged the labour party with him and got an almost previously unelectable party to win 3 general elections on the spin. Like Thatcher (who I personally loathe like many others) Blair had the innate ability to judge the timing and the times to perfection.

Was Britain better as Thatcher left as PM than it was before she started?

What about for Blair?

Economically, yes. Without a doubt.

Blair IMHO just carried on a legacy of greed.she started it and he refined it.

Blair has caused far more damage than Maggie ever did.

Funny how the Labour lovers try to brush his era under the carpet even though they voted for him.
