Tony Towers?

I used to have his poster on my bedroom wall as a kid growing up. A couple of months ago I was chatting with Dennis Tueart and amongst things he remarked about how disappointed he was to find out when he arrived at City to sign for us that Tony had been sold to Sunderland as part of the deal to bring Dennis here. He really rated Tony and was looking forward to playing alongside him.

Always thought of him as the “new” Dave Connor
Not too helpful sorry I’m just a FOC with my memories getting rid to buy Horswill albeit tueart was part of the same deal was a catastrophic mistake
Probably the first sign that Allison was fucking useless without Joe as I think this could have been one of Allison’s first “deals” as a City manager
Towers went onto to be capped by England whilst at Sunderland
How can you say that the deal that brought Denis Tueart to City was catastrophic?

I didn’t try reading what I typed

What was catastrophic was letting towers go and incidentally tueart became a good acquisition granted in fact he hadn’t proved to be much more than bang average in a second division team when we bought him

Did Mick Horswill come with Tueart?
Yes it was Tueart and Horswill for Towers (with or without cash adjustment?).

I was disappointed to see Towers go but Tueart was a great signing with 220+ league appearances and 86 league goals.

Just had that BT Infinity installed and got talking to the lad doing it. Turns out we were at school together in the mid 80's. He started saying how he was only here for 6 months as he moved to Tampa. He then said about how his dad was a footballer and at the end of his career went to America. 'Who was you dad mate?', I asked. 'Tony Towers', he replied.
Went on to say he was here during Marsh's era and Tueart.
Anyone remember him? Actually felt embarrassed when the obvious look of , 'sorry mate never heard of him' was etched on my face!
Shame on you ;-)

Is it safe to assume no one has any way of contacting Tony?! (Towers) An old match shirt has appeared which was potentially the number 13 he wore against Academica in the Cup winners Cup in 1970, and I'd love to ask him about it.

It was a screamer against Coimbra.. was expecting it to go to a coin toss as to who progressed.
What a fantastic cup run that was. Aged 10/11, my first season going with my mates instead of my Dad. The Coimbra match was the first time I’d encountered extra time (I was normally back home in Withington for 9:30pm). We had chips from Yew Tree Rd and I was that excited I threw up all night.
Didn’t Tony Towers make an appearance pre match on the stage at City Square a few years back? Seem to remember he’d put a bit of timber on and I was surprised when they announced who he was.

Not sure about him on stage at City Square as I never tended to bother with it tbh.
Went to all the home games in that season and loved the night games..no. 53 bus home to Cheetham Hill..and to local chippy for chips n gravy ..happy days..
Fuck me if I ate chips and gravy at 11 at night I wouldn't sleep lol..the joys of old age

There's only one Dave Connor!

The most underrated player of the 60s at City imo. Joe Mercer was a big fan of Dave but couldn't see him as a regular starter. He was the ultimate Mr Reliable off the bench.

I can't believe I have just 'liked' a post on a 15 year old thread :-0
I really should concentrate when I read;-)
Hope the poster(s) are still on here to see.

Horswill got to be up there with one of the most naff signings we’ve had.
