Tony Towers?

I played against Tony towers when we were at school. Dirty centre half he was. No class at all...

I rember Tony Towers well, he was excellent but polarised City fans ( whats new ). A lot of fans used him as a "whipping boy" for bad performances and the debate over Tony caused many real and I mean real fights between City fans. He went on to play for England after he left us and like Ian Bowyer was one that got away through our own fault.

I heard a funny tale about TT. Apparently Malcolm Allison told him that as part of the deal to bring Tueart to City, Allison would give Tony £10k and Swales would give him £10k.

Several years later Tony was at a do at Maine Rd and Swales waved to him saying "How you doing Tony?"

Tony responded with "I'd be a lot better if you paid me that ten grand you owe me!"

At least Big Malc paid up.

I remember him, he played about the same time as: Ray Ranson, Bobby MacDonald, Nicky Reid et al. Just into the John Bond era I believe which ironically was after Big Mal's last stint (RIP and God bless him). He had a tash reminiscent of Gerry Gow and Kenny Clements. He was a midfielder I think though he didn't play too many games that I saw back then, he was a squad player reall. Then again there wasn't after that FA Cup Final v Spuds :-(
think you mite be getting mixed up mate he wasnt around then

rodney marsh took his place in the city team thats why we did not win the league that year we were doing well till that happened he was a very good mid field player

Nah mate - think you're mixing him up with Dave Bennett.

Tony was a good player for City playing 25-30 games a season and rarely was a sub. Unfortunately for him he was surrounded by stars. Good passer, good tackler, great team player. And of course City fans whinged at him because he was not Bell, Lee or Summerbee.

Just had that BT Infinity installed and got talking to the lad doing it. Turns out we were at school together in the mid 80's. He started saying how he was only here for 6 months as he moved to Tampa. He then said about how his dad was a footballer and at the end of his career went to America. 'Who was you dad mate?', I asked. 'Tony Towers', he replied.
Went on to say he was here during Marsh's era and Tueart.
Anyone remember him? Actually felt embarrassed when the obvious look of , 'sorry mate never heard of him' was etched on my face!

i remember him very well , did a great job for us, local lad and played that way, city meant something to him.i think he was from moston.
did he not go to sunderland as part of the tuert/ watson /horswill deal?
I thought we sold him to Birmingham (after Ron Saunders got the job at St Andrews) ....but on reflection think you're right de niro

Thinking about this one, he actually cost us the title in a strange way as I think he was the player Rodney Marsh replaced when Big Mal ( RIP ) bought him from QPR. We were the best side that year and should have won in a canter. I think Tony played in midfield with the maestro Bell and it was a well balanced team until the introduction of Rodney.

he was a good player and we made a big mistake in selling him to sunderland for horswill
although tueart who came in at the same time was well worth the money paid

do you remember their debuts? tueart was shit and horsewill had a blinder, i said to my mate the ginger haired kid was ok but that tueart is shit:)

my football eye is still no better.

lol
did you say the same about carlos at the beginning of last season?
or did you leave it to Dam?

tony towers was a sound player and very underrated imo. he played in the ecwc final in vienna coming in the side to replace the injured mike summerbee. he notably scored the winning goal against academica de coimbra in the quarter final second leg at maine road in the last minute of extra time.

Bit of a long shot, but is anyone on here in touch with Tony? Asking for a friend.

It was a screamer against Coimbra.. was expecting it to go to a coin toss as to who progressed..

Always thought of him as the “new” Dave Connor
Not too helpful sorry I’m just a FOC with my memories getting rid to buy Horswill albeit tueart was part of the same deal was a catastrophic mistake
Probably a sign that Allison was fucking useless without Joe as I think this could have been one of Allison’s last “deals” as a City manager
Towers went onto to be capped by England whilst at Sunderland
