Top 105 Guitarists - The Winner page 33

All due respect — he’s contributed precisely one truly important record to the history of pop/rock music and that was over thirty years ago. Fine guitarist, but can’t hold a candle importance- or influence-wise to a lot of other musicians on this list.

I realiz(s)e we are talking “favo(u)rites” here so this may not matter nor does it have to. But I’m personally surprised he’s as high as he is.

Depends if you like his bands or not! You can throw that allegation at many players who are brilliant but as you say, that's where favourite comes in. Most people have heard of Hendrix but could they name more than one song?

I thought he might have a few more votes personally is all.

I could name a few Hendrix songs but possibly not loads; however, that doesn't mean much considering I have all his original studio albums and at least one later live (!) release. I'm just don't invest any effort in remembering song titles.

Hendrix didn't make my top 10 and I probably wouldn't have him top 20 in terms of favourites. In terms of greatest electric guitarists, top 3 probably. In terms of technique, he's quite possibly been surpassed by many modern players but who knows for sure what he'd have shown us if he had lived a full life. His impact / influence on rock guitar playing is perhaps matched by only one other guitarist.

That’s the thing with musicians like Hendrix. What he did was a quantum leap forward compared to everything that had come before. But there are probably loads of guitarists who were eventually better than him in terms of technique and the music they produced.

My view is that he paved the way and inspired many, but he’s not the greatest.

Just for fun .....

Purple Haze
Voodoo Chile
Hey Joe
The Wind Cries Mary
Crosstown Traffic
Castles Made of Sand
All Along The Watchtower (Cover alert, although the best version)

.... I named those off the top of my head without Googling.

Yeah, I'd probably have named all those bar Castles. Foxy Lady, Angel, Wild Thing and Star Spangled Banner (more covers) also come quickly to mind.

"...Watchtower" is perhaps the greatest cover version ever.
