Torres (Merged)

Re: Torres is a done deal

The Torres situation is just typical of how everything we do at the minute brings bad press. Any manager in the world would say they'd like Torres, nothing disrespectful there.

As for the Liverpool fan's comments, I understand where he's coming from as nobody likes a team that has the ability to outbid all rivals, I would also be a little bitter if the Sheikh had bought Everton, Spurs, Villa, Liverpool. The reality is though that the money doesn't guarantee us success we've not won anything yet, but im confident that will soon change.

The top teams with the most money have always taken the stars from those less wealthy. The problem are rivals have is that whilst it used to be Scum taking Rooney, Ferdinand et al, Chelski taking SWP, Lampard etc and Liverpool taking Torres from Athletico, John Barnes from watford and so on and so on, they;re now worried that they are the prey.

I personally don't think we will get Torres but it's a liitle hypocritical of liverpool fans to have a problem if we do. Just because Torres liked Liverpool as his English team, make no mistake he is an Athletico Madrid fan, Liverpool came in offering more money and a better chance of winning trophies. What is the problem if we can now offer the same incentives to him.

Ok before an argument breaks out I'll just point a few things out.

For all you lot who say liverpool are average, a spent force, on their way down, have you got short term memory or are you ignoring the fact that we finished 2nd last year in the league with 86 points? This season we've had a horrible injury list, the worst in years and a bit of bad luck as well let's not forget things like the beach ball incident? So, one awful season for us, and one brilliant season for Man City, your 4 points above us in the league, and all of a sudden you're better than Liverpool now. I'm not gonna be arrogant, and throw around insults about club sizes etc. because I've already stated I don't buy into that, but that is a show of arrogance from you lot. Now, if you finish ahead of us again next season, and we have an awful season then I'll accept your points, but I don't think one bad season is enough to completely write us off and say Liverpool are finished. Furthermore, I can't remember who it is saying City won't be spending any more than about 100 million this summer, when Torres alone would cost you £100 million maybe more. How much will Fabregas and Ibrahimovic amongst others cost on top?

Liverpool have had it. Your downfall is inevitable.

It's a matter of time before players relaise they have to leave to win something.

Re: Torres is a done deal

It makes me laugh when people quote sums like £100 million for Torres. Okay he's world class, but why all of the sudden does every world class player have bizzare price tags, Kaka was a one off and since then the highest transfer to ever go through was ronaldo for £80million and he was the balon d'or winner!!! kaka cost what? 56 million or something? if we got torres it would realistically be for 35 million -40 million, david villa would only cost around 30 aswell. remember 30 million is the most any premier league club has payed for a player! and that was us!!!

Re: Torres is a done deal

Because Liverpool have no desire to sell, and I'm pretty sure that they know that we have a bit of spare cash knocking around.

No desire to sell? Im not pretending to know what the state of Liverpool's finances are in... but i'm pretty sure that the owners are selling up, Barcleys wants 100million pounds in the next 4 months or something, they arent going to get 50 million from champions league football and there managers future is in doubt... Im pretty sure they would bite our hand of if we offered 40 million...

And I'm guessing City are now set to dominate world football for as long as Sheikh Mansour lives?

Like I said earlier, there is an air of arrogance on this board that I usually associated with the Red side of Manchester. Both sets of fans are now equally arrogant, what's worse though, is look at your trophy cabinets. City actually haven't achieved anything, just spent lots of money. Yet you lot think you can attract world class talent this summer? Congratulations when you sign a new band of Make-shift galactico mercenaries in the summer.

I'll re-iterate, as a Liverpool fan but also a football fan, it is better for the game for clubs at the top to be as strong as ever, it maintains competition and high standards in the Premier League, boosts our reputation abroad so better players want to play here, furthermore it makes attending games, paying Sky, ESPN etc. worth my while. Like I said before, I'm not arrogant and I believe every club deserves a chance at success, however you fans are making a bad name for yourselves, and the people representing your club e.g. Gary Cooke and Roberto Mancini are making bad names for themselves in the media. I don't Mancini being here for too long anyway, isn't he more of a stop-gap? then you're moving for someone else in the summer, Mancini is a new Rafa Benitez, Negative defensive tactics where he plays not to lose against better sides, that's why you'll fail to make fourth place. You easily have the team to do it, but I see more stalemates with Spurs and Villa ahead like our stalemate with you. Must make for some fun viewing, as a Liverpool fan I know all too well how boring it is haha.

Re: Torres is a done deal

You're right when thinking about it, but other teams could come along and bid that type of money. I suppose that we would bid pretty high just to make sure that nobody else can match us.

You're right about the new arrogance of some people, but i think it's inevitable that we'll become a regular top 4 club with the sheer level of investment we have. Unfortunately for you, it's Liverpool who look the most vulnerable right now to a new team coming in and taking your regular spot, i don't think that's arrogance, just the truth based on this season and your finances (which depends on your prospective takeover i suppose). Arsenal are the next most vulnerable. Personally i sort of hope that we can get 6 teams vying for the title/top spots regularly, it'd just be more interesting.

Where you're wrong though is about Mancini. Benitez has had years to get you playing the way he wants. Mancini has come in and had to work with what he's got - a bunch of very good players, but not really suited to the style of play he favoured at Inter. In Italy he and Inter were known as a very attacking team, not cautious. If he stays (and it is an if at the moment, we don't really know) and he get's his own players in, we'll become a different proposition. Our current style of play is short term pragmatism, to try and get the job done.
