Travel to the USA

Way dodgier in the UK, Philly maybe an exception
That's not very nice. I mean it's true, but also not very nice.

Although as a native Philadelphian I always found Baltimore and Chicago far worse. And I love Chicago. But man does it get rough in some areas.

Don’t come to Idaho
Nice try — that’s not Idaho. The words on the sign are spelled correctly.

What on earth are you going to do with “2-3 nights in each of the big cities in Texas”???

Don’t waste your time!

If you fly to Miami, DRIVE the Gulf Coast, to get a “flavor of the South!” You can pick your stops, based on what you want to see and do. Then, when you get to NOLA, grab a flight anywhere in the (mid-)western US you might want to visit, THEN fly back to MIA for a night or two of R&R before heading home!

MIA-Tampa/St Pete - Pensacola/Destin are all in FL and all great beach towns. From there, it’s a choice of how much “Americana” you’re interested in. Most Brits seem to like a day or two (or one night, at least) in New Orleans (NOLA). If Houston grabs your fancy, it’s a short hop from NOLA, and you can literally fly to anywhere from Houston!

Just a thought…
Agreed — New Orleans is a can’t miss — one of my favorite towns. There is actual world-class, top chef food AND great local cuisine in NO. There are some very good restaurants in TX but NO is arguably a top 3-5 city for food in the US. I generally think Texas is a miss if you had your choice of anywhere in the states to go — I don’t see Austin as being much more interesting than either Dallas or Houston other than the UT hipster vibe, a somewhat nicer downtown and worse traffic. I prefer Portland, Seattle and Nashville for nouveau-cool American cities.

Wtf is a nouveau cool city!

Had a brainwave and thinking of doing a trip over the pond in March, just do cheap accom like hostels and motels, good way of meeting people and flight prices looking loads better than summer.

Too many places I'd like to visit. Have brainstormed flights in and out of Miami and internal flights to Texas, toying with the idea of 2-3 nights in each of the big cities in Texas, with a few days either side in Miami. Other trips could be a week or so in Miami, Boston, or up to Canada in either Toronto or Vancouver. Anyone done similar short trips over the pond and/or any city recommendations?
Think the only Texas city really worth visiting is Austin, imo. Dallas is fine, but is a corporate town. Houston is underrated in some aspects (great food scene, grimey but fun nightlife) but is also an urban hellhole so I wouldn't put it at the top of my to do list. There's plenty of nature and small towns in Texas worth seeing, but the big cities are hit or miss. San Antonio is pretty cool as well actually.

The tough part about this part of the country is it's so spread out. But New Orleans is a can't miss if you're down that way. Normally March would be Mardi Gras season but, you know, COVID.

If you want to hit a few cities, DC-Philly-NYC-Boston are all very close together (by US standards), easy to train/bus to, and are all well worth visiting. I lived in 3 at one point or another so happy to give recs. They're also fairly close to Toronto and a lesser extent Montreal (which is an absolutely fantastic city and worth visiting) but be warned those two are chock full of Candians. For a more west coast vibe Portland-Seattle-Vancouver are few hours apart with some great smaller stops (Bend, OR or the peninsula outside Seattle) along the way.

Denver is great and Colorado has tons of nature/parks/rec if that's your vibe, but will probably still be under snow in March.

NOLA is, IMHO, a smelly shithole, where the ONLY thing it has going for it is good food! Loves me a shrimp or oyster Po Boy and some beignets, but it’s a “one night on the town” place for me….unless you are doing two nights and spend the intervening day here:

Loved Portland for years, but the downtown is getting to be a bigger shithole every year. Seattle similar. Lots to see and do, but the joy of wandering around downtown quickly loses its allure when your senses are assaulted on almost every street corner. Denver turning the same way.

Last time I was in Seattle, I was almost pissed on by a guy whom I apparently surprised as I walked by an alley.

In Denver, I was waiting to cross a street and a family pointed out the guy sitting against the store was literally masturbating in broad daylight in the street, middle of the afternoon. Shopkeeper came out and told him to get lost or the police were going to be called. He threw his water bottle and big Budweiser can across the street as he struggled to hold his pants up.

BOTH of those events happened on the busiest “tourist” streets in town!
