TV Series

Wife used to love this, not so much me :)

Alien Earth. First 3 episodes. Excellent so far.
Hmmm. All turned a bit too David Cronenberg. I appreciate the films of course feature some of that, but across a series of longer length I’m finding the continuously claustrophobic/gruesome nature of it all a bit repetitive tbh. I would say the Prodigy is one of the most dislikable villains I’ve seen in a long time though!

Just watched the end of 12 episodes of The Gone on iplayer, the NZ/Ireland co-production crime mystery.
Bit frustrating to put it mildly, as the ‘answer’ to the mystery was obvious many episodes ago, yet to leave the viewers with such an unsatisfying ending is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t think I’d bother. I’m not sure it’s worth 12 hours of your time.

You see, i like the extra length allowing for other stories to develop. I won't post spoilers here - but the other ideas the world is able to explore rather than just "scary alien around the corner" is interesting to me. He's an interesting villain for sure, one of the reasons i'm enjoying it so much.

Yep, appreciate there are other strands to the story, so they may develop more.

Safe Harbour

Yet another Irish drug dealer family.

Watched 3 episodes, pretty average acting, pretty average show up to now.

I don't know what you mean by "continuously claustrophobic/gruesome nature of it all a bit repetitive"; what else is the 'Alien' franchise of films? It's dark, dystopian, low-tech grimy sci-fi.

I don't ever recall seeing a bright shiny sun in any of the main course of the films, so why break the SP of the franchise (although that may happen)? It's the world that it is set in, so I accept it for what it is.

I agree. It's good to expand the 'Alien' world. In fact, it's crucial as long as the creatures are interesting and not goofy.

Not sure why but 'Prodigy' is not really giving me any satisfaction, right now. A classic dark intellectual bad guy usually has something succinct to say by now, that blurs the lines of morality and immorality.

It may happen, though...

I agree largely. But I made the point about the length of it. Watching a setting for a 2 hour movie is one thing; watching it for a 10 hour or whatever series, is something else.

I do really enjoy dark, dystopian stuff - I’ve loved Westworld, Silo, Brave New World, Dark Matter and Severance all over a long format, so it’s definitely not that which has made me question it. But none of those are so samey, with jump scare/drooling monster killing being the staple of the show.

Just my take anyway mate. I will stick with it for another couple of episodes.
