Then we are where we are then - trying to unload out of form, underperforming players for decent prices. Difficult job.

The last I saw of Nasri he was in good form, following on from his form when he returned from injury at the back end of last season.

Last I saw Nasri was a very injury prone 29 year old on massive wages who returned from the summer so unfit and overweight that it took 2 months for him to be fit enough that he could play. He's also got a reputation of being a twat (although he's never caused problems here) and is banned from the France team because of it.

I like Nasri, would have liked him to stay, but I'm not surprised it was almost impossible to shift him. To be honest I'm amazed they have.

We have to look where we are in the pyramid of clubs to work out why we don't get good fees for our players. When we were lower down the ladder and we had a good player he was naturally looking to further his career and his agent would look for better clubs for him. The clubs that would come in for them would be richer than we were and would be looking to augment their squads and could pay better wages so would be prepared to pay good money and the players would be making a step up so would be happy to go. The situation is now reversed. The only players we would sell now are those that are past it or those that we deem not good enough anymore, they will be on good wages so will be hard to shift. If we discover a gem then we are going to want to keep him and he is going to want to stay. The only 2 clubs that would pay us more than we paid for a player would be Barca or Real Madrid, and then only if we wanted the player to go. That's the reality of it. The only players we would make a profit on now would be those we develop in our youth system.

Am I right in assuming that you're backing up GM's assertion that it was Pellegrini's fault that Samir's stock has fallen?

Did I say that? No.

Nasri's stock has fallen because he's getting old, has been out for a year, and before that he had an indifferent season.

I thought Nasri looked quite good when fit last season, didn't you?
He looked ok, never looked completely fit to me (which isn't surprising given his injury) and looked decent enough relative to those around him, many of who had gone right off the boil, but I wouldn't say he was consistently brilliant or anything. And anyway, how many matches did he play, 6 or something? We have a squad of largely excellent players on salary levels that reflect that quality. It isn't really surprising that it is difficult to shift them when by and large they have under performed for 18 months but their salary levels are still those of players performing to higher levels. Pep has shown in a matter of weeks that they can be returned to that form with a bit of decent management but unfortunately for those we are trying to sell, they haven't had that chance to show a return to form.
