Txiki Begiristain

He’s signed some great players and brought in the world best manager so there’s credit due

However there are definitely major issues, he’s a director of football so he has an over arching responsibility for the squad some if the decision making is bordering on the bizarre.

The left back thing is actually negligent, in his time here he’s only signed 1 and he’s blown his knee out before he got settled in the team.

Pretty much every summer we go in to the season short in 1 or 2 positions and it bites us straight away, Delph becoming a left back saved us in Peps first title

This year it’s up top, and left back again.

Ederson, Sane, De Bruyne, Walker, Laporte, Sterling, Otamendi, KDB, Bernardo, Fernandinho have all been key players peforming at a high level in title winning teams

However the below signings, if we are honest were never good enough for where we want to be:

Mahrez
Rodri
Nolito
Bravo
Cabalerro
Mangala
Demechellis
Danilo
Bony
Jovetic
Fernando

Strange names in there.Demichelis was a great signing, although stayed a season to long instead of giving Denayer a chance. We could do with a few more of those cheap squad player type signings.

Won trophies with both Willy and Bravo. Got our money back with Nolito.

Jovetic was wonderful football just crocked. Danilo was decent arguably more reliable than Cancelo. Rodri needs another a season to be assessed.

Mangala and Bony were ridiculous signings. I quite liked Fernando at Porto but he had a bit of shocker here.

I would have boldend out the first 3 of this seasons signings, but it is too early to tell yet whether or not they have been good signings or not, the others have had time to establish that question.

Players in Bold are good signings IMO made by the club at the time they made them, or did well for what we signed them for, those in none-bold are bad/irrelevant and poor signings IMO for a wide range of reasons, lack of football skills, injury prone, too much spent, signed and never played much etc

But THAT is a full breakdown of ALL signings we made that cost money to purchase (first team or then loaned out) or were free signings made for the first team only.
Harsh on Delph, was a big part of the centurions season at LB

There is an elephant in the room here, being the level of investment. The FFP restrictions were lifted this summer because of Covid, hence Chelsea really went for it. There was no reason why we couldn’t do the same, new LB and top draw striker which we clearly needed, if the owner was prepared to bank roll it, he didn’t. No complaints, it is his money, but Txixi can only work with the budget he has.

Chelsea 'really went for it' because they were banned from signing anyone so hadn't spent anything in the previous windows

Fair point, but the FFP strictures did not apply in the window just closed, so they were able to do it.
I don’t know for sure but I don’t think FFP was abolished completely this window was it?
Think they were slightly relaxed but can’t remember reading there was Carte Blanche to spend what you wanted.

with reduced income from Covid
Absolutely and as I said originally it is not a criticism of the owner. The point was that when Txixi gets criticised, it is often from the perspective that he is coming up short with a limitless budget, the general press view, whereas be it either FFP usually, Covid or a more conservative level of investment, he is limited to a budget.
