Txiki Begiristain

Pep pulled off a miracle last season rotating false 9s. It won’t happen again. Especially when everyone else has improved their attacking options.

Why is it that a certain section of our fanbase seems to think the false 9 system has stopped working?

We've played 29 League games with it and scored 75 goals. There is absolutely no sign of anyone "figuring it out".

Why won't it happen again? Why will this group of world class players under a world class manager suddenly stop being able to play a system they've used for 11 months?

In have slightly different view. I think our system last year wasn’t a false 9 at all. False 9 is a type of player. What we played last year was no 9 and get goals from midfielders, we had no false 9.Kane iis more of a false 9 than what we played last year.
What we are seeing this season is a real false 9 in Torres, not a midfielder getting goals, he is playing as a true false 9, and looks like he might have everything to be a very good one.

Not getting a striker in has been a failure. No way anyone can believe otherwise.

We needed a striker, have done for 2 years really. And we don’t have one. We were told X is the price and spent 3 months haggling over a fee that was set at the start and wasn’t there to be negotiated down. But we still did anyway. A Sisyphian exercise in futility & again, at best it’s naive from the board…
We only wanted one striker though and we can't get him. So we aren't going to panic buy someone else.

What connection is there between "everyone else has improved their attacking options" and the same teams being able to defend our "false 9".

People have been saying this for 3 or 4+ years now.

Delph, Zinchenko, Mendy, Cancelo.

What have we ever won with this shite at left back?
I'll tell you what we haven't won and what we won't win.
Perversely it's not a trophy that particulary exercises me, but it clearly matters to the club and many on here.
Anyway, serendipitous fixtures have made this all very academic now haven't they.

I don't think left back is stopping us from winning the champs league final, the team as a whole not playing well and Pep being Pep did that last season and the other fuck ups and VAR appear on the list well before whoever played at left back.

Edit but my original reply was really to do with the whining about 'costing us' when blatantly we have been winning a lot of things for 10 years.

No dressing up this window for Txiki. He’s had a shocker.

I’m sure we’ll be fine … but leaving us strikerless going into the season is negligent.

Especially after what Khaldoon said in his interview about replacing Sergio.

Course it’s not just on him, the board had a stinker going all in on that laughable gentleman’s agreement with Kane.

At best it’s been a naive window for the board…
We aren’t strikerless. Ferran Torres is going to be a striker for City.

All the above including the unsettled LB situation I'd say.
For what it's worth (nothing), I'd play Zinchenko there more, as with game time I reckon he could really learn and nail the role. Not just throw him in and take him out.

Name me a player who played well in the champs league final, name me 3 and you can have your point on Zinchenko.

I think I am quite safe, the team as a whole was woeful from Pep downwards.

Though classing the community shield as a big game does lose you a point to start with lol
I’m not talking about the team, I’m talking about the left back spot on its own. I do like Zinchenko but against the better sides in showpiece games (and you’re right the CS isn’t a particularly big game, but that particular one was a very intense game, it was all Liverpool second half and Salah gave him a torrid time), he’s been poor defensively.

I think Zinchenko is one of the best short passers of the ball in the team and we’ve won trophies with Delph Danilo Zinchenko and Cancelo filling in at left back. But that’s all they’ve been, filling in. I would like to see a specialist left back signed in the next few windows because there’s more to come from this team if we just get it right in every position.

I get what you're saying, but Torres is playing as close to a real 9 as it gets in play style. His only purpose in the team is to make runs to either score or create spaces behind him (on top of the usual defensive stuff any forward has in the team). He drops deep even less than Aguero did. I saw a pass map and he's barely involved in play.

A false 9 is essentially a midfielder shoehorned up front that can come deep and effectively shift the midfield 10 yards further up the pitch with standard midfield play of their own. That's not Torres.
