United (H) - League Cup SF 2nd Leg Post-Match Thread

We’re through so job done and I suppose you can claim the game management worked in that regard but if that was our attempt at containment then we’ve got zero chance of getting anywhere in the champions league. They were mounting some serious pressure before the sending off which let us off the hook against what is a distinctly average side and thats being generous.

Getting fed up with sterling stealing a living these last few months. Surely the likes of Jesus and Foden who are regularly dumped to the bench regardless of how well they play are looking on getting pissed off with sterling constantly starting games ahead of them in this kind of form. Play him on the right or not at all.

otamendi had his usual couple of brain farts but was superb tonight. it’s rare I praise him but it’s thoroughly deserved tonight particularly in the absence of Laporte and Fernandinho stepped up and should be commended for it.

Yet apparently he didn't take it seriously. He's just put out two of the strongest City sides he possibly could have done in the League Cup and a fair reflection of that tie would have been a 9-2 win on aggregate.

Because the objective of a two legged tie is to get through. If we beat Madrid 3-1 and then lose one nil at home nobody will moan. We achieved our objective so all is good in my world.
It’s the performance tonight that’s being criticised not the result.

Only read the first 10 pages but there's some serious knee jerk reactions.

Shit result, some embarrassing individual performances (Mahrez, Otamendi and Sterling) and even worse decision making (fucking SHOOT Silva FFS).

However, I think the system was brilliant, it just wasn't implemented very well and we made a lot of individual mistakes. Take our chances and Pep is a genius, Pep isn't to blame for Sterling's crisis of confidence, Pep isn't to blame for Silva's brain fart, Pep isn't to blame for Mahrez ducking 70/30 challenges, Pep isn't to blame for Otamendi being Otamendi and Pep isn't to blame for the referee ignoring persistent fouling.

Pep is however to blame for not playing Foden and Jesus, their energy was could have been utilised far more.

And the performance got us through. We were by far the better team tonight. By miles. Too many of our problems in two-legged matches has been treating them as individual games. We're through and deservedly so. That's all that matters

the performance got us through but we lost the game

We were at times far superior but it was interpersed by a numerous periods of really poor play where they had possession fro some longer periods of time. We were scrappy and poor

Pep has said plenty of times its how we win not if we win that matters - it was a sub par performance and our level dropped (again) - playing a better team would have seen us lose going to a cup final
