Ooh fool.com report lol

The "ugliest IPO of the year"

The inglorious prize for worst-performing IPO goes to Manchester United, the fabled U.K. professional soccer team. As Motley Fool managing editor Brian Richards noted at the time of Manchester's listing, there are two likely explanations for this.

First, Man U is saddled with massive amounts of debt related to its 2005 leveraged buyout by Malcolm Glazer, an American billionaire who also owns the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Indeed, according to the company's own F-1 filing, "Our indebtedness could adversely affect our financial health and competitive position."

And second, the club's ownership structure gives shareholders essentially no say in the deal. While the Glazer family got shares with 10 votes apiece, public investors receive only one vote per share. It was for this reason that Brian issued this prescient warning: "Public shareholders, if you think you'll have any say in the decisions of the enterprise, disabuse yourself of that thought right now."

Am I right in assuming for an IPO, especially when they offer no dividends with the shares, that the expectation is the shares will surge strongly right from the start?

Obviously, with no dividends the only way to make money from the shares is to sell them on at a higher price than you bought them.

It's like a game of pass-the-parcel where everyone wants to be the person who sells the shares just as they hit their peak and before they start to go down again. Looks like the music stopped on the rags IPO about 30 seconds after they started sellling the shares ;-)

This is what your email should have said.

The point that seems to be missed here is.

United.

Furgie has just managed his 1000th game in 25 years and will retire in not the too distant future. To salvage that 1000th game he had to rely on Furgie time (WHICH HAS BEEN A TRADEMARK FOR A GOOD FEW YEARS) + 38 year old Scholes so nothing has really changed in that 25 years + The age of the current team is rising + the debt created by the owners is having a big effect on who they can buy +.The shares have not gone as planned and have moved there finance to the Cayman Isles to possible avoid tax. Last season they missed out on the Prem top spot, the FA Cup, the League and the Champs League which had a massive effect on revenue.

To Summaries: Good fan base outside of Manchester with a very bias media stream (don’t upset Furgie) which helps propel a good? Image rights and shirt sales, they have also had a more successful history on and off the pitch than City over the last 25 years which however, is getting a lot harder to maintain but you cannot take away the fact they always never give up and play to the whistle, (unless the score is 6-1)!!

City.

Had massive investment over a shorter time than United and In the last 3 years this investment has propelled City from a none descript team to a team that has won three trophies in that period including the Prem title, Although City got knocked out of the Champs league the FA Cup the League cup last year they have already started this season off with a trophy. City is heavily investing in young talent to bring through the academy on and off the field which has reduced the age of the squad. They are also placing massive Investment in the academy itself which will help create employment for Manchester people in the building and running of the academy to help create future City teams. The manager has a 5 year contract and at this present time is the most successful manager in the prem. With regards to history in it’s entirety, Manchester City are 8 years older than Manchester United, - City 1894 / United 1902 and have always played in the Manchester boundary since conception, does this indicate a longer history as the original Manchester club.

To Summaries: Enough said I suppose, YOU TELL ME WHICH CLUB IS MOVING FORWARD FOR THE FUTURE IN A MORE POSSITIVE WAY.

the rags had a suck up day on sunday to all the "fans" on the priority season ticket list who hadn't yet signed up. basically they invited them to attend the swamp to watch the southampton game in one of the corporate suites with a few free drinks chucked in, they then got worked over by some sales people to make them part with their money to buy a ticket. find it quite amusing myself!!

Yeah if they get on it now they'll have a season ticket by 2022!

Unfortunately they will still have 70 thousand + numpties attending every league game. we cant really gloat about that. Can we ?

-- Mon Sep 03, 2012 11:09 pm --

The gloating over their tickets is childish, bitter and wholly wrong. They will have around 70,000 people attending most of their league games. Much as i dislike them this is a stick we cannot beat them with and is rather pathetic imo.
