caller on now thinks they should sign reus and "gunderang" from dortmund
If they were to make fourth it would not be that unrealistic. The only stumbling block is Madrid seem to be set to sign Gundogan. Say another midfielder takes their fancy then a bid of 60 million +Kagawa would leave the Dortmund fans more than happy to sell Gundogan+Reus.

Moyes is just doing a terrible job at United. The squad only need slight rebuilding and should have been about where Chelsea were now. They should have been a few points off the top and starting to settle into the managers new style. He is a good manager, but no where near good enough for title challengers and it appears not even good enough for a top 4 team. He looks way out of his depth.

United could start with a back 5 of De Gea, Vidic, Jones, Rafael and Evra. De Gea is the best keeper in the league and still very young. Evra is no where near what he once was, but can still do a job. They have good depth in the back with Smalling, Evans and Fabio. Going into this season they were fine, but might need a left back in the summer.

In midfield is where everyone knows they are weak. The only midfielder they had good enough for the top 4 is Carrick. Still they had 30 million to spend. Why didn't they buy Fernandinho, Moutinho, De Rossi or Gustavo? They could even had looked at slightly weaker players like Cabaye, Mcmarthur or Strootman. All of those would have vastly improved the midfield. Instead Moyes spent the best part of 30 million on Feilani; he is very good player, but not good enough or the right player for United.

On the winger they have two very promising wingers in Januzaj and Zaha. Zaha is raw and done nothing, but then again Moyes was hesitant to play Barkley last year. Young, Valencia and Nani may not be good enough, but can do a job for a season.

Upfront they have lots of quality with RVP and Rooney. Welbeck and Hernandez are more than capable back up. Kagawa can do a job behind the striker too.

Their future depends on who gets top four. If they get top 4 then they can continue to attract the big names and easily readdress the problems in the squad. Moyes however, is not good enough to challenge Mourinho or the City squad. Getting top four and winning the odd trophy is the best they could do with him.

If they don't get top 4 then once more it depends on who gets it. Best case scenario for them Everton grab top 4. They simply dont have the infrastructure, the clout or the money to solidify there place. Playing in the CL would mean they certainly do not get back there the next season. However, if Liverpool get top 4 then United's decline could become very serious in a hurry. Liverpool have the name, the clout in Europe, the talented young manager and the money to take their place in the top four. This could really lead to them falling into just a top 6 side.

Other big problems they have in the summer is that there two best players are probably going to be off if they don't make top 4. Rooney would have just 1 year left on his contract and they would be forced to sell. RVP looked unhappy from the start of the season and would likely demand a move at the end of the year. These two would bring in money, but United out of the top 4 and without Rooney/RVP (their most famous players) would really struggle to replace them.
Disagree.

Their squad was looking old last season but the form of RVP, and the determination to hit back after City's title win on the last day, together with our weak defence saw them win the League but they have a number of players who are either over rated or past their best

De Gea is a good shot stopper, but he stays on his line, and when he does leave it, he makes mistakes
Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Carrick and Giggs are all past their best whilst Kagawa has been poor.
Their top players are Rooney, and RVP and this season they have been injured a lot which means the cracks are more visible than they were last season. I think they can still make the 4th spot, but they'll need to get RVP back.

Ferguson is to blame, not Moyes.
Ferguson's strength of mind, a characteristic that carried united to the title last season more than any other factor, including the signing of Van Persie, is proving their undoing this season.

Sergio's goal made him so consumed with reclaiming the title from us, that he became blinded to all other considerations and because of the power he wielded at that club he was allowed to do so without any consideration of the wider consequences of failing to rebuild as he had done so many times before. It has been apparent for some time, for example, that united's back four in particular was collectively reaching a tipping point due to nothing more than the sands of time doing their stuff.

When any Empire is built so intimately around one individual it creates the duel problem of no-one to question their bidding when they're there and no-one to adequately replace them when they're gone. united's succession planning has been truly appalling, another example of Ferguson's malign influence on the club, to contrast, in fairness with all that he delivered over an incredible 26 years.

The aura of invincibility that surrounded that club for a couple of decades has evaporated in the space of six months. The best example of this is referees, who previously, when making split second decisions would, more often than not, favour united due in no small part to the looming presence of Ferguson. Now, possibly harbouring subconscious feelings of resentment about being imposed upon by him, they seem to be going the opposite way. Once a bully loses its air of invincibility they don't tend to be treated too charitably by those who have suffered at their hands.

This really does have a decline of an Empire feel about it and the best thing is, like the decline of any other such body in human history, once those wheels start turning they are almost impossible to stop.

They aren't going away, they're too big a club for that to present a realistic prospect, but their days lording it over the rest of English football are finished and there's a certain poetic beauty about the fact that process this was accelerated by Ferguson's overwhelming desire to go out a winner.

Hope he enjoys his retirement.

superb post.
How much would it cost to have this post tattooed on my back?

Has anyone got any idea when the Media might turn on them?

A couple of days ago we had PB's wonderful story of Ferdinand not being allowed on the team coach to Carrow Road when he was all suited and booted and we have now had the list of the non - magnificent seven who Moyes wants to get shut off. We are also hearing the stories of unrest coming from RVP and more than likely Rooney.

The Media seem to be portraying this crisis very lightly and don't seem to be in any rush to dish the dirt or kick a man when he is down. Fortunately, Howard Webb doesn't share this approach and showed little mercy yesterday with some of those awful decisions ! - the sense of karma when Webb turned a deaf ear to Lloris' late, knee high challenge on of all people Ashley Young was in the words of Niall Quinn "stupendous".

Favouritism, squad unrest and a long overdue helping of poor refereeing decisons apart; The squad is nowhere near strong enough. By my (very genorous) reckoning - maybe 8 or 9 players good enough for a top 4 side.

got a link to the Ferdinand/coach post?
