I can't help thinking we have missed a trick here. United and Liverpool have really gone for this competition not for the honour of winning it but to get a big piece of the increasing American interest. Playing a weaken team particularly in defence makes sense in terms of building up for the new season after a world cup but there is a long term game going on here.

I do like the idea of their big players knocking lumps off each other in this final before the season starts, but if we had scored big victories against both of them in front of this potentially lucrative American audience we would have increased our importance in world football considerably (and dampen theirs)
Nah, fuck that, I'd rather win the Charity Shield and I don't rate that very highly. Going for "big wins" might have meant picking up needless injuries before the real stuff begins.

Absolutely correct but unfortunately many on here believe pre season tours are just for getting match fit.

To see these stadiums in the US packed with red shirts only confirms how unfair the prem league has been.

So what were we to do?

Bring back Vinnie and Martin early from their well-deserved post World Cup break just so that we could win a meaningless pre-season tournament and risk them picking up injuries that could have a long-term effect on our chances of retaining the Premier League and doing well in the other competitions?

I don't agree at all. I think Manuel and Co. got it right.

I think we got it right too. In case anyone's forgotten, there's always next year, and despite its many and varied troubles, I'm pretty sure the USA will be here too for us to wow.

There's also NYCFC, a potential marketing asset (among other things) neither the rags nor Scousehampton have.

The holistic -- read: prudent -- thing to do was give our WCers a rest, get our other starters to stretch their legs, evaluate (or display) some fringe players and get a peek at the future of our brighter youngsters. Mission accomplished.

We are playing the long term game of getting an established presence in the US in NYCFC and our branded soccer schools which will yield a much bigger fruit than the once in two years glamour friendly approach used by the top clubs uptil this point. Winning or losing this tournament won;t change that and the focus in pre season should always be on getting the players upto speed in the correct timeframe for the season ahead, important not to lose sight of that

T-shirts being printed as we speak.....
Open top bus parade being planned for the home coming....
These classless twats will be in gloat overdrive about winning the final...
Shows how far we've come and low they've stooped.....
Love it!!
