United and Liverpool have really gone for this competition not for the honour of winning it but to get a big piece of the increasing American interest. Playing a weaken team particularly in defence makes sense in terms of building up for the new season after a world cup but there is a long term game going on here.
I do like the idea of their big players knocking lumps off each other in this final before the season starts, but if we had scored big victories against both of them in front of this potentially lucrative American audience we would have increased our importance in world football considerably (and dampen theirs)
We've just bought a club in the most publicity rich city in the USA!!!
To want us to push ourselves in a nothing tournament when we have a more important domestic game a few days after this magnificent final is ludicrous.
Let the historians fight it out. We'll win the ones that matter
We may well have missed a marketing trick but I ask myself which would we rather aim for:
a) plastic ejaculation over a Micky Mouse Cup, or
b) a couple of real trophies at the end of the season?
