Di Maria could cost Manchester United £150m

The Old Trafford club have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the Real Madrid winger, with negotiations set to continue on Sunday

By Paul Clennam

Manchester United may have to spend a staggering £150 million to wrap up a deal for Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria.

Goal understands United have edged closer to the signing of the Argentina international, who is keen to link up with Louis van Gaal.

And the Old Trafford club are facing a significant outlay if they are to secure the signature of the 26-year-old winger.

Madrid are aiming to receive somewhere in the region of £70m and £75m for Di Maria, though the initial fee paid by United could be lower with bonuses and add-ons supplementing the deal.

Di Maria, meanwhile, could pocket a £5m signing-on fee and sign a five-year contract worth close to the £300,000-a-week wage earned by Wayne Rooney.

United have secured just three signings this summer, bringing in Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for around £29m, left-back Luke Shaw in a deal which could rise to £31m, and £16m Argentina defender Marcos Rojo.

After a disappointing transfer window so far, the pressure is on Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to complete a move for Di Maria.

Indeed, Woodward is understood to be desperate to seal the signing of the winger, who has been a target for United over several weeks.

Di Maria has moved ever closer to a Madrid exit as the start of the new season in Spain has approached.

The winger was not in the squad for the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup defeat to rivals Atletico, and Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed the player has said his goodbyes ahead of his departure.
"Di Maria didn't train train [on Sunday], he came just to say goodbye," Ancelotti told reporters. "It is not official, but everything is solved. We thanked him for what he has given the club and we wished him good luck.

"Personally, I have had very good relationship with Di Maria. He has done a fantastic job at Real Madrid. We are able to replace him very well. It was his decision, because the club did everything possible, offering everything they could to have him here. He decided otherwise, so good luck to him."

Negotiations to complete the deal are set to continue on Sunday.

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahaahahhahaah.

Interesting take on the Di Maria move on Sunday supplement, 'it is a lot of money but it's just what you pay nowadays' not a hint of criticising them for over floating the market! Hypocritical somewhat.

Rags inflate the price of wingers, Chelsea inflate the market for the price of defenders, we of course have bought the title and ruined football.

Weirdly, despite it being "what you pay nowadays", it's by far the record transfer in this country, massively more than anything other than the bizarre Torres deal. It's almost like it's a complete lie...

Maybe this should be in the agenda thread, but if we had of gone for say Barkley at 50m would the press have been as kind to us. I don't think so.

Of course the rags will gone on ad infinitum about it being THEIR money and not money from a sugar daddy. We are the ones who inflated the transfer market, hence the need for FFP and yet, Real Madrid the rags of Spanish Football and the Scum rags seem to have blown transfer fees out of the water this summer. Hope they fucking crash and burn.

Number of times City have been involved in a deal to break the British transfer record: 3
Number of times united have been involved in a deal to break the British transfer record: 9

None of those deals could be described as 'following the market', as such, by definition.

If united sign Di Maria and utterly smash the transfer fee record spent by a British club, to describe it along those terms is utterly dishonest or stupid.

It always made me chuckle when Taggart used to moan about 'no value in the market' after accepting £80 million for Ronaldo, like his club was somehow extraneous to the process relating to the price of footballers around that time

This summer above any has shown up what FFP is all geared for. I hope the powers that be will look at it and make them even more determined to dominate,if that is even possible. I would honestly feel ashamed of City if they had collaborated with the cartel to shut other great clubs out just to preserve themselves. It's pathetic and embarrassing.
